SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Barry Roberts knocked down Jack Russell in their fight for the vacant Australian junior flyweight title Saturday night, and then hit Russell again while he was down. Roberts was disqualified, and Russell won the title.

Russell was leading on all three cards when Roberts floored him in the ninth round.

On the same program, Scott Brouwer retained his Australian lightweight title with a decision over Paul Nasari.

Nasari was penalized a point for a low blow in the ninth round. There were no knockdowns.

Brouwer improved his record to 19-3-1, while Nasari’s fell to 6-3-2.


COGNE, Italy (AP) - Stefania Belmondo of Italy edged favorite Elena Vaelbe of Russia by 0.9 seconds Saturday and won the women’s World Cup 10-kilometer ski cross country freestyle race.

Belmondo, the Olympic champion in the 30-K, trailed Vaelbe by 10 seconds in the initial section. She took the lead by mid course and withstood a strong comeback by the Russian in the last few kilometers.

The Italian woman was timed in 25 minutes, 13.7 secoonds.

The second-place finished padded Vaelbe’s lead in the overall standings


CHICAGO (AP) - Northeastern Illinois point guard Victor Snipes was among three men charged with robbery after police said they took purses from two women. He was suspended from the team because of the charge.

Snipes was held at Cook County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond. The crimes took place on Thursday.

Snipes led NCAA Division in steals last year.


TOKYO (AP) - Herianto Arbie upset top-seeded Ardy B. Wiranata 15-7, 15-8 Saturday, and moved into the final to meet fellow Indonesian Joko Suprianto in the Yonex Japan Open Badminton Championships.

South Korean Bang Soo-hyun will play Ye Zhao Ying of China in the women’s finals.

Wiranata and Bang were silver medal winners at the Olympics.
