NAACP to host national convention in Boston in 2020

BOSTON (AP) — The NAACP is hosting its convention next year in Boston.

The prominent civil rights organization made the announcement Monday as it prepares for its convention in Detroit this June.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People says Boston hosted one of the association’s earliest conferences in 1911 and its Boston branch remains one of its strongest local chapters.

Mayor Marty Walsh says hosting the organization’s 111th conference is a testament to Boston’s commitment to “achieving racial equity.” The city recently finalized plans for a memorial honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

But the city has also struggled to come to grips with a history marred by racism. The Red Sox were the last Major League Baseball team to integrate and school desegregation in the 1970s sparked racial protests and riots.
