February 8, 2019 GMT

The community of Alliance has received another announcement of a retail hit this week.

On Wednesday, Wisconsin-based retail chain Shopko released an updated list of store closures. The Alliance store, a Shopko Hometown store located at 312 Flack St., has been scheduled for closure on May 5.

The Alliance community isn’t the only western Nebraska community hit by a Shopko closure. The store in Gordon closed on Dec. 22, according to the list. Shopko had already announced in December that the Kimball store would close. According to the list released this week, the date of closure for that store has been set at March 2.

Other Nebraska stores slated for closure are in Bellevue, Lincoln, Norfolk, Ord, Auburn, West Point, Plattsmouth, Ainsworth, Ogallala, Superior, Gothenburg, Falls City,

However, Alliance will also weather the closure of its Alliance store. Sears announced in December that the store, which had been left off the list of previous closure announcements, would be among 80 stores that would close in March. The company had already slated 182 other stores for closure and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October.

In January, Shopko Stores filed for bankruptcy protection. It said in a news release that The company says excessive debt and ongoing competitive pressure are forcing it to seek protection from creditors. Shopko is reporting assets of less than $1 billion and liabilities of between $1 billion and $10 billion.

Shopko says it plans to continue operating through Chapter 11 reorganization after securing $480 million in financing from a group of lenders led by Wells Fargo Bank. The financing will allow Shopko to continue to pay employees, vendors and suppliers.

In Wednesday’s announcement, Shopko also released it would be closing other Shopko and Shopko Hometown stores, as well as optical centers. The complete store list is available online here.
