Pursuit of Louisiana car reported stolen ends in fatal crash
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Authorities in Louisiana say one person in a car reported stolen was killed and two others were injured when the driver crashed into a tree while fleeing officers.
License plate readers captured the plate of a stolen vehicle entering Jefferson Parish early Monday morning, Sheriff Joe Lopinto told news outlets. When deputies tried to stop the driver on a New Orleans road, the motorist sped off. The vehicle was going so fast that deputies were “well behind” and saw a “cloud of smoke” at the crash scene, Lopinto told the Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate.
New Orleans police who responded to the crash told news outlets that it appeared the driver had crossed a median.
The identifies of the victims haven’t been released.
The New Orleans police traffic fatality unit will lead the investigation into the fatal crash, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation into reports the car was stolen, the agencies said.
