Colorado officer who shot, killed unarmed man indicted

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man during a confrontation in northern Colorado.

Prosecutors with the Weld County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday that Fort Lupton officer Zachary Helbig has been charged with one felony count of manslaughter stemming from the Jan. 16 death of Shawn Billinger.

Investigators say Helbig chased Billinger following a disturbance in Fort Lupton and shot him once in the chest when he walked rapidly toward him yelling “kill me.” Billinger died at the scene.

Prosecutors say Helbig “acted recklessly,” and his use of deadly force was not justified.

The Greeley Tribune reports he was cleared in a non-fatal shooting in 2016 when he worked for the Platteville Police Department.

A phone number for Helbig could not be located Friday night.
