Avis V. Joyce Jefferson

Avis V. Joyce Jefferson was born on January 7, 1935, in New Iberia and passed away January 16, 2018, in Sacramento, California.

She was raised in New Iberia and was a resident of Sacramento, California, for most of her life. She graduated from Jonas Henderson High School in New Iberia. Avis Jefferson was a retired registered nurse at Sutter Memorial Hospital. She was also a long time member at Shiloh Baptist Church in Sacramento, California. There she was the Sunday School secretary of Class A-6 and co-chair of Lydia Circle. She volunteered many hours at Maryhouse and Loaves & Fishes.

Avis leaves to mourn her death her husband of 49 years, William J. Jefferson Sr.; one daughter, Karen Freeman (Joseph); two sons, Darrell Williams (Greer) and William Jefferson Jr. (Connie); two grandsons, Joseph Freeman III and Brandon Blymyer; one granddaughter, Victoria Freeman; one great-granddaughter, Ariana Freeman; special cousins Mary Morris of Los Angeles and Rosemary Rochon of New Iberia; one sister-in-law, Alice Shaw of Cotton Valley, LA; as well as a host of nieces and nephews to cherish her memories.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lombard and Chevie Hamilton; as well as her maternal grandmother, Victoria Warner.

The viewing will be on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Thompson’s Rose Chapel, 3601 5th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95817. The Memorial service will start at 11a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, 3565 9th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95817, on Thursday, January 25, 2018. Internment will be at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at 1:30 p.m.
