Health coalition to sponsor fitness day in Bridgeport
BRIDGEPORT — The first ever Community Fitness Day will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, 2414 Fairfield Ave. in Bridgeport. The free community event, open to all children and their families, is designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, prevent and manage disease and connect individuals and families to resources. The event will be held rain or shine as all activities can be relocated inside if needed.
The event is a collaboration between Wakeman Boys & Girls Club and Get Healthy CT. GHCT is a local coalition of many different partners that works together toward improving the health of the Greater Bridgeport community. Wakeman is a facility that provides quality programs to hundreds of children from the Bridgeport community each year.
Fitness Day will include an obstacle course, interactive games and activities inside and outside, yoga, karate and Zumba for children and adults, fitness demonstrations, free books for children while supplies last, free health screenings for adults, information on local resources, educational workshops and giveaways and more.
Interested families will also be able to receive free, fresh and nutritious food from the Connecticut Food Bank Mobile Food Pantry, which will be on site from1 to 2 p.m. Those who want to participate in the mobile food pantry should bring their own reusable grocery bags.
