CINCINNATI (AP) — The Bengals signed linebacker Vontaze Burfict to a three-year contract extension Thursday as he began his latest NFL suspension for egregious conduct on the field.
Burfict's contract was up at the end of this season. The new deal runs through the 2020 season.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs did their NFL-mandated duty by trimming their roster to 53 players on Saturday.
They might not be done, though.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said during a conference call it's possible more moves could be made before their opener Thursday night at New England. One spot worth watching in particular is running back, where the release of C.J. Spiller left Kansas City with only rookie Kareem Hunt, Charcandrick West and fullback Anthony Sherman.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict had his NFL suspension reduced from five to three games Wednesday for his egregious hit on a Chiefs running back during a preseason game.
During the second preseason game, Burfict leveled running back Anthony Sherman on a pass play when he wasn't the intended target. The play wasn't penalized, but the league can impose fines or suspensions after reviewing plays.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Coach Marvin Lewis defended the hit by Vontaze Burfict that caused the NFL to suspend him for five games and insisted that the Bengals linebacker has changed his ways on the field to conform to the league's emphasis on player safety.
Lewis said there's nothing wrong with how Burfict leveled Chiefs running back Anthony Sherman during a preseason game, resulting in the linebacker's latest suspension.
