BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — No one needs to warn the Colorado Buffaloes about Khalil Tate . They know Arizona's dual-threat quarterback all too well.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Peyton Ramsey learned one key lesson from the two previous quarterback competitions at Indiana: Forget the comparisons.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Colorado went into its game against Arizona last season game planning to stop quarterback Brandon Dawkins.
When Dawkins went down after a late hit out of bounds, Khalil Tate ran all over the Buffaloes for 327 yards, an FBS record by a quarterback.
Tate has been hampered by an ankle injury this season and hasn't put up the same prodigious numbers he did last season, but Colorado knows all too well what he's capable of once he gets rolling.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Former Indiana and Arizona quarterback Brandon Dawkins says he gave up football because he needed to deal with his "deteriorating" mental health.
Dawkins told Hoosiers coach Tom Allen on Sunday he was leaving the program after enrolling in school this summer as a graduate transfer from Arizona. He lost the starting job to Peyton Ramsey.
Dawkins had not provided a public explanation until writing a post Wednesday night on Instagram.
Indiana coach Tom Allen just keeps adapting on the fly.
When he announced top rusher Morgan Ellison was suspended indefinitely last week, Allen installed a ready-made backup plan. When Allen announced Monday that second-string quarterback Brandon Dawkins left the program after failing to beat out Peyton Ramsey for the starting job, Allen simply asked last year's state Mr. Football Award winner, Reese Taylor, to move back to his old spot.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Peyton Ramsey will be the starting quarterback for Indiana in the Sept. 1 opener at Florida International, but he won't have sophomore Morgan Ellison to hand the ball off to.
The Hoosiers announced Friday that Ellison has been suspended indefinitely and that linebacker Mo Burnam is suspended for the opener.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Quarterback Brandon Dawkins has decided to play his final college season at Indiana.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound California native will graduate from Arizona in May. Dawkins started the first five games last season before a rib injury limited him to only two games the rest of the season.
He started 14 of his 23 career games with the Wildcats, throwing for 2,414 yards, 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Dawkins also has 232 carries for 1,582 yards and 20 touchdowns.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Khalil Tate burst onto the national scene with a record-setting performance against Colorado off the bench. He kept running away from defenders, even when teams knew what was coming.
UCLA couldn't stop him. Neither could California or Washington State. Even Southern Cal had trouble slowing Arizona's sophomore quarterback in a victory over the Wildcats last week.
The Associated Press has been honoring college football's best with an All-America team since 1925. This season, the AP released its first preseason All-America team and last week a midseason team. The full three-team All-America selections are unveiled in December. The sixth installment of the weekly All-America watch features a quarterback who started the season as a backup, an SEC linebacker on a sack streak and a matchup in the middle of the Big Ten's game of the year.
TUSCON, Ariz. (AP) — Khalil Tate proved he wasn't a one-game wonder, giving the Arizona Wildcats another Saturday of big plays and another win.
Tate followed up last week's record-setting performance with another strong one, rushing for 230 yards and two touchdowns to lead Arizona over UCLA 47-30.
TUSCON, Ariz. (AP) — Khalil Tate followed up last week's record-setting performance with another strong one, rushing for 230 yards and two touchdowns to lead Arizona over UCLA 47-30 Saturday night.
The sophomore quarterback, who took over for the injured Brandon Dawkins early in last Saturday's win over Colorado, set an FBS single-game rushing record for a quarterback with 327 yards in that game. Tate got the start on Saturday, and ran for a 45-yard touchdown on the fourth play of the game.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — UCLA has struggled defensively this season, ranking near the bottom of the FBS in scoring and rushing defense.
Next up for the Bruins are Arizona and Khalil Tate, who had the most prolific day running the ball by a quarterback in FBS history.
Even with a week off to prepare, this could be a difficult matchup.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA is taking Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez at his word.
The Wildcats' depth chart lists Khalil Tate or Brandon Dawkins as the starting quarterback, so the Bruins are preparing for both for their game on Saturday. That designation comes after Tate ran for 327 yards in a win at Colorado, the most yards rushing ever by an FBS quarterback.
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado coach had a simple request after the game.
"Could someone please tackle No. 14 for Arizona?" Mike MacIntyre said.
Too late. He's already gone.
Backup Khalil Tate rushed for 327 yards, an FBS record by a quarterback, and accounted for five touchdowns to help Arizona hold off Colorado 45-42 on Saturday night.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — When Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley went down with a shoulder injury in the second quarter, the Utes had an experienced and reliable alternative ready.
Troy Williams, a senior who started 13 games last season, came on and guided the No. 23 Utes to a 30-24 victory over Arizona on Friday night in the Pac-12 opener for both schools.
Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez loves a good running quarterback and he has one in Brandon Dawkins.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they will face one who might be at least as good when they take on No. 23 Utah in their Pac-12 opener Friday night in Tucson, Arizona.
The once-methodical Utes (3-0) have revved up their offense this season behind quarterback Tyler Huntley, and so far so good, with victories over North Dakota, BYU and San Jose State.
EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Brandon Dawkins scored six touchdowns — three passing and three rushing — to lead Arizona to a 63-16 win over UTEP on Friday night.
Dawkins, who played only one series in the fourth quarter, threw for 155 yards on 18-of-22 passing and ran for 143 yards on 13 carries.
Arizona came into the game as a 25-point favorite, but struggled in the first quarter against winless UTEP before scoring 28 unanswered points.
EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Brandon Dawkins is expected to start at quarterback when Arizona visits UTEP a week after he was replaced in a loss to Houston with an explanation that seemed to fall somewhere between injury and ineffectiveness.
Coach Rich Rodriguez figured the question was coming heading into a Friday night renewal of a long-ago rivalry in the Wildcats' first regular-season trip to El Paso since they were in the WAC with the Miners 40 years ago.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona closed last season by running for more than 500 yards and opened this season by doing the same thing.
The defense? Still needs a little work.
Brandon Dawkins accounted for three touchdowns and Arizona ran for 506 yards to offset some defensive breakdowns in a season-opening, 62-24 victory over Northern Arizona on Saturday night.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Brandon Dawkins ran toward the sideline, where his momentum carried him an additional five yards into Miss Arizona. The Arizona quarterback ended up going down from the collision, landing right on top of Tommy Lynn Calhoun.
Turned out to be one of the best tackles of the night against a Wildcats' ball carrier.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Samajie Grant ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns, and Arizona racked up a school-record 511 yards on the ground to roll over rival Arizona State 56-35 Friday night.
