BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — It was a crazy finish that only started with a Hail Mary.
Brian Johnson kicked a 42-yard field goal in overtime and Virginia Tech pulled out the wildest victory in its 100 meetings with Virginia, 34-31 on Friday night. The Hokies won their 15th in a row in the series and kept alive their hopes for a 26th consecutive bowl appearance.
NAGOYA, Japan (AP) — Sosuke Genda hit a three-run triple that chased starter Brian Johnson in a four-run second inning, and Japan beat the MLB All-Stars 4-1 Thursday for their fifth win in the six-game series.
Genda scored on Ryosuke Kikuchi's sacrifice fly off Erasmo Ramirez at the Nagoya Dome.

WE MEET AGAIN
NL Cy Young Award candidates Max Scherzer and Aaron Nola share the mound for the second time in five days, this time at Nola's home park in Philadelphia. Nola (15-3, 2.13) got the better of Scherzer (16-6, 2.13) and the Nationals last Thursday in Washington, pitching eight innings with nine strikeouts in a 2-0 victory. Scherzer held the Phillies to two runs over seven innings, taking his first loss since July 2.
BOSTON (AP) — An early stumble did little to slow down the Boston Red Sox.
Boston scored seven straight runs after falling behind 3-0 in the first and beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3 on Friday night.
"We had a good night. Guys put in quality at-bats from the first hitter on," said Xander Bogaerts, who led the latest rally for the Red Sox with a two-run triple in the first.
Bogaerts added a pair of doubles and the Red Sox improved to 51 games above .500 at 87-36.
TORONTO (AP) — The Boston Red Sox moved struggling left-hander Drew Pomeranz to the bullpen and will keep left-hander Brian Johnson as a starter after ace lefty Chris Sale returns from the disabled list.
Pomeranz, 1-5 with a 6.31 ERA, is winless in eight starts since a May 2 victory over Kansas City. Pomeranz matched a season-worst with five walks in Tuesday's start at Toronto, leaving after 4 2-3 innings. He has completed more than five innings twice in 11 starts.
TORONTO (AP) — The streaking Red Sox have had plenty to be pleased about in recent weeks.
The return of Rafael Devers gave Boston one more reason to smile.
Devers came off the disabled list and hit a two-run home run, Brian Johnson pitched a season-high seven innings to win his second straight start and the Red Sox extended their winning streak to six games with a 10-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night.

The Yankees and Red Sox open a four-game series at Fenway Park with the two best records in the majors, but minus key players.
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox put ace Chris Sale on the disabled list Tuesday with left shoulder inflammation, meaning he will miss his scheduled start this week against the New York Yankees.
Sale said the soreness is in the same spot as usual after a start, but he wasn't recovering as quickly. Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said there were no plans for an MRI.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run homer during a six-run fifth inning, J.D. Martinez and Eduardo Nunez also went deep, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Washington Nationals 11-4 on Tuesday.
Martinez drove in four and leads the majors with 26 homers and 71 RBIs. Boston has won 17 of its last 19 interleague games.
Washington has lost four straight and 16 of 21 to fall to 42-42, its first time at .500 since it was 17-17.
BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox pitcher Carson Smith dislocated his pitching shoulder during a tantrum and went on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday, an injury Boston said could be major.
The 28-year-old right-hander was hurt when he threw his glove in the dugout after leaving Monday night's 6-5 loss to Oakland. He entered with the Red Sox trailing 5-4 in the eighth, allowed Khris Davis' leadoff home run, then retired three straight batters. Brian Johnson relieved to start the ninth.
TORONTO (AP) — Luke Maile made up for "the dumbest play" of his career with the biggest home run he's ever hit.
Maile hit two homers, including a two-run shot in the 12th inning that gave the Toronto Blue Jays a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
Maile's drive off Boston's Brian Johnson (1-2) improved the Blue Jays to 5-0 in extra innings after they overcame a superb outing by Red Sox starter Chris Sale.
MIAMI (AP) — The way the Boston Red Sox are pitching, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and David Ortiz might not be able to hit them.
The All-Star trio sat together in the Miami Marlins owners box Monday night as Brian Johnson gave the Red Sox their fifth solid start in five games, allowing one run in six innings in a 7-3 victory.
All five Boston starters have allowed less than two runs, a franchise first to begin a season.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Yankees slugger Aaron Judge could be used at times as a leadoff hitter this season.
The 2017 AL Rookie of the Year was at the top of the lineup and went 1 for 4 in a 5-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
"It's a potential. That's why we're deploying it and assessing it," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "We're going to take a peak here. We'll see how it feels.(backslash), Simple as that."
BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has returned to the lineup after being activated from the 10-day disabled list.
Pedroia, on the DL since May 30 with a sprained left wrist, was back at second base Friday night when the Red Sox opened a three-game series against Detroit.
Pedroia is hitting .292 (50 for 171) in 45 games with two homers and 21 RBIs.
TORONTO (AP) — Twenty-one months removed from his first and only start, Brian Johnson was back on a major league mound Tuesday night.
He certainly made the most of it, helping the Boston Red Sox to an 8-7 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, picking up his first win in the process.
"It's everything I thought it would be," he said after helping the Red Sox run their season-high win streak to four.
BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez will miss his scheduled start Tuesday against Toronto after Boston placed him on paternity leave.
Rodriguez's wife, Catherine, gave birth to a boy on Sunday.
Manager John Farrell said left-hander Brian Johnson is likely to start in place of Rodriguez. Johnson has gotten no decisions in two starts at Triple-A Pawtucket, where he has a 1.69 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings.
Tim Tebow made his first rookie mistake even before stepping into the batter's box.
The New York Mets newcomer walked behind home plate and took his practice swings near Boston's on-deck circle.
"I didn't know who that was back there. I thought it was the ball boy," AL Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello said.
The former NFL quarterback's debut as a big leaguer didn't go much better Wednesday.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — AC/DC is losing another member.
Bassist Cliff Williams has announced his departure from the group in a video posted on the band's YouTube channel Tuesday, the same day the group wrapped up its "Rock or Bust" tour in Philadelphia.
Williams says he's "just ready to get off the road" and needs more time for family and to "chill out."
