LOS ANGELES (AP) — With the distraction of the Super Bowl, freezing temperatures affecting large portions of North America and only one big new release in theaters in "Miss Bala," movie going audiences largely took the weekend off from the theaters in what is estimated to be the lowest-earning Super Bowl weekend in nearly two decades.
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Bryan Cranston will star in a new TV legal thriller set in New Orleans.
Showtime said Thursday that Cranston will play the lead role in "Your Honor," a limited series from executive producers Robert and Michelle King of "The Good Wife" and "The Good Fight" and Peter Moffat.
NEW YORK (AP) — Matthew McConaughey notched one of the worst debuts of his career, Oscar nominees saw only modest bumps and M. Night Shyamalan's "Glass" easily remained No. 1 on a quiet weekend in movie theaters.
The weekend's two new wide releases — McConaughey's tropic noir "Serenity" and the updated King Arthur tale "The Kid Who Would Be King" — both flopped with moviegoers who instead continued to flock to "Glass" and Kevin Hart's "The Upside."
NEW YORK (AP) — Kevin Hart isn't hosting the Oscars, but he's got a number one movie. "The Upside," starring Hart and Bryan Cranston, surpassed expectations to open with $19.6 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
It's said that January is one of the prime months that Hollywood chooses to dump its most embarrassing films and "The Upside" doesn't exactly disprove that notion.
Few films in memory have squandered so much acting talent in such a cliche-ridden, exploitative and dishonest way. It deserves its frozen grave.
