Driver dies when car plunges into river near Centerville

CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a person has died when a car plunged into the Chariton River in southern Iowa.

The Appanoose County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called Monday morning when a car left Highway 5 north of Centerville and plunged into the river. The river was running high and the vehicle was submerged.

State Auditor Mary Mosiman says in the special report released Tuesday that the lines between operations of the Appanoose County Conservation Department and the fundraising foundation are improperly blurred.

Iowa woman charged with arson, murder in husband’s death

CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — A Centerville woman has been charged with murder and arson after authorities found her husband's body in their burned home nearly two weeks ago.

Centerville police say they arrested 45-year-old Barbara Pasa on Friday.

Police Chief Tom Demry says in court documents that Pasa claims she left her husband, 50-year-old Tim Pasa, lying in bed on May 5 with a lit candle in the room.

Firefighters find body of man in southern Iowa house

CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — State and local officers are investigating the death of man whose body was found by firefighters in southern Iowa's Appanoose County.

A Centerville Police Department news release sent Tuesday night says the body of 51-year-old Timothy Pasa was found Saturday in a fire-damaged Centerville house.

One firefighter was injured battling the blaze but was released from a hospital Sunday morning.

Officials: 2 killed in south-central Iowa condo fire

CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Officials in south-central Iowa say an elderly couple has been killed in a fire that tore through condominiums in Centerville.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports that the fire occurred late Thursday night at the Diamond View Condominiums. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from two of the buildings.

May trial scheduled for man accused of killing hunter

CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — A May trial has been scheduled for a man accused of killing a hunter in south-central Iowa.

Court records say 27-year-old Ethan Davis entered a written plea of not guilty Monday to a charge of first-degree murder. His trial is set to begin May 1.

Davis is charged with killing 31-year-old Curtis Ross, of Cedar Falls, whose body was found Dec. 2 in a remote area of Appanoose County. An autopsy report says Ross suffered several stabbing and gunshot wounds.
