HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Calvin Fields, a second-grade student at Ceredo-Kenova Elementary School, signed this past week with the Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball program.
Seated between his mother, Brentney Fields, and Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni at a table in the Cam Henderson Center media room, 8-year-old Fields signed an imitation National Letter of Intent, put on a No. 1 Marshall jersey and embraced Marco, the Marshall mascot, with reporters watching and cameras rolling.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The East Region bracket is serving up two in-state rivalries on Sunday, one testy and complicated and the other one much less so.
In a Hoosier State showdown, No. 2 seed Purdue (29-6) faces No. 10 Butler (21-13) in Detroit.
In the nightcap to the entire round of 32, No. 5 seed West Virginia (25-10) renews its rivalry with No. 13 Marshall (25-10) far from the Mountain State, at San Diego State's Viejas Arena.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Marshall Thundering Herd celebrated like never before.
For the first time in six tries during 62 years, the Thundering Herd won an NCAA Tournament game.
Jon Elmore scored 27 points and Jarrod West hit a huge 3-pointer with three minutes left to help No. 13 seed Marshall topple fourth-seeded Wichita State 81-75 in the East Region.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Dan D'Antoni was a 23-year-old assistant with the Marshall basketball program in 1970, and a babysitter, too. He was at the home of a friend and team physician for the Thundering Herd when a plane carrying members of the Wichita State football team crashed in Colorado.
As they watched the news unfold, and learned of the 31 lives lost, Dr. Ray Hagley turned to D'Antoni and said: "You really don't know how tragic this is going to be unless you live there."
