CHICAGO (AP) — Mike Brosseau cheered for the Chicago Cubs as a kid growing up in Northwest Indiana. He estimated that he went to about 50 games at Wrigley Field as a fan.
Capsules of National League Central teams, listed in order of finish last year:
MESA, Ariz. (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year contract with Drew Smyly, adding another experienced pitcher to their staff.
Smyly's deal includes a mutual 2023 option. The 32-year-old Smyly went 11-4 with a 4.48 ERA in 29 games, 23 starts, for the World Series champion Braves last year.
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs stayed busy on Thursday, agreeing to contracts with infielder Jonathan Villar and pitchers Mychal Givens, Daniel Norris and Robert Gsellman.
The Cubs also finalized right-hander Chris Martin's one-year deal and placed left-hander Brad Wieck on the 60-day injured list with a left elbow strain.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers made two more moves Friday to boost their roster for a playoff push, acquiring relievers John Curtiss from the Miami Marlins and Daniel Norris from the Detroit Tigers.
DETROIT (AP) — Jake Fraley made a game-saving catch in the ninth inning, then drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th to lead the Seattle Mariners over the Detroit Tigers 9-6 on Wednesday night.
Fraley robbed Isaac Paredes of a game-ending homer with one out in the ninth, reaching well over the left-field fence to make the catch, then threw to first for an inning-ending double play.
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Tigers rookie catcher Eric Haase has seemingly come out of nowhere, hitting six home runs already this month.
Matthew Boyd, though, insisted he saw it coming after pitching to Haase during the offseason.
CHICAGO (AP) — Yoán Moncada and Jake Lamb supplied the early power. Yasmani Grandal and Tim Anderson delivered late.
Lance Lynn came through with another solid start, and Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa moved into position to make a jump on baseball's career wins list.
SEATTLE (AP) — Tarik Skubal struck out a career-high nine in his first win of the season, Harold Castro drove in three runs and the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 6-2 on Wednesday night.
Skubal (1-6) scattered four hits over five innings, showing emotion at key points as he helped Detroit earn its first series sweep in Seattle since April 2006.
Port St. Lucie, Fla. — Daniel Norris is still fighting for a spot in the starting rotation. Manager Ron Gardenhire re-affirmed that Monday after the Tigers' 4-2 exhibition loss to the Mets.
The reaffirmation seemed significant since Norris pitched the eighth inning and threw just 12 pitches.
Lakeland, Fla. — For Daniel Norris, it didn't change a thing.
One of the tangential impacts of the Tigers signing veteran left-hander Francisco Liriano last Friday, potentially, is that it makes Norris' hold on the fifth spot in the Tigers rotation less secure.
Lakeland, Fla. – This is an important season for Cam Gibson – at least from the Detroit Tigers' perspective.
Gibson, the Tigers' fifth-round pick out of Michigan State in 2015, is 24. He was promoted to High-A Lakeland last season and that's likely where he will start this season.
