SANDY, Utah (AP) — Diego Rubio scored from distance in the 60th minute, seconds after entering as a second-half substitute, and Western Conference champion Sporting Kansas City tied Real Salt Lake 1-1 on Sunday in Game 1 of the two-legged semifinal.

It was Rubio's first touch since entering as a sub. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando's clearance attempt was deflected by a hustling Felipe Gutierrez and Rubio settled it, took a touch and sent it inside the far post.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Gerso Fernandes had two goals and two assists and Sporting Kansas City moved into first place in the Western Conference with a 5-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.

Felipe Gutierrez opened the scoring in the 18th minute for Sporting KC (15-7-6), which moved a point ahead of FC Dallas in the standings. Fernandes doubled the lead five minutes later with a run behind the defense and a chip shot to beat the goalkeeper.

NEW YORK (AP) — David Villa tied it in the 86th minute off a free kick and New York City FC snapped a two-game skid with a 1-1 draw with D.C. United on Saturday.

Bill Hamid had seven of his eight saves before Villa broke through with a bender from just beyond the top of the penalty arc for City (14-8-7). It was Villa's 11th goal of the season.

Gutierrez took Yohan Croizet's cross at the top of the penalty arc and slotted home a roller past goalkeeper Joe Bendik. It was his sixth goal of the season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gerso Fernandes and Ilie Sanchez scored to help Sporting Kansas City beat Los Angeles FC 2-0 on Saturday night.

Fernandes opened the scoring in the 17th minute, settling Diego Rubio's pass with his first touch and finishing a left-footed shot just inside the far post. Sanchez doubled the lead in the 66th minute, converting from the spot after Felipe Gutierrez drew a penalty against Dejan Jakovic.

PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) — Chile midfielder Felipe Gutierrez scored from a free kick in stoppage time to help Real Betis win 2-1 at Osasuna in the Spanish league on Friday.

Gutierrez apparently surprised Osasuna's defense, which was positioned to defend a cross, when he blasted his shot from distance past goalkeeper Nauzet Perez.

Gutierrez also protected Betis' initial lead when he was on the goal-line to clear a shot near the half-hour mark.
