BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) — The federal government has awarded about $2.8 million to a Maine science lab for projects that will focus on genetics.

NEW YORK (AP) — Four scientists have won prestigious medical awards for genetics research and development of a widely used anesthetic nicknamed "milk of amnesia."

Winners of the $250,000 awards from the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation were announced Tuesday. The prizes will be presented later this month in New York.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Genetics researcher Oliver Smithies, who won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 2007, has died at age 91.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced Smithies' death Wednesday. University spokeswoman MC VanGraafeiland said school officials were told of his death on Tuesday by his wife, Dr. Nobuyo Maeda.

Comcast founders give $25M to Children’s Hospital research

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Children's Hospital of Philadelphia says the founding family of Comcast has given $25 million toward a new $50 million initiative designed to put the hospital at the forefront of pediatric genetics research and development.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/2cXgF3G ) the hospital made the announcement Friday.
