It's easy to design a gorgeous master bathroom if you have a huge budget. But with the right choices, says interior designer Gabriel Anderson, you can have an exceptional master bath without overspending.
"Having huge expanses of marble is amazing and wonderful, but you don't have to have that to have an amazing bathroom," says Anderson, co-founder of the New York design firm Dean and Dahl. There are "little touches you can incorporate that really bring a master bath to life."

Six cast members of "The Brady Bunch" gathered Thursday in Los Angeles at the home that was featured in the opening and closing of the sitcom. HGTV purchased the home in the Studio City neighborhood in Los Angeles for its new series, "A Very Brady Renovation."
NEW YORK (AP) — A fine art consultant in New York and an interior designer in Florida stole an elderly woman's identity and used it to bid millions of dollars on famous paintings and defraud the renowned Sotheby's auction house, federal prosecutors allege in court filings.
Joakim von Ditmar and Antonio DiMarco are accused of using the identity of a wealthy, 80-year-old retiree to place winning bids on two paintings at a Sotheby's contemporary art auction in the fall of 2017.
Lighting a room seems simple: Plug in a lamp or flip a switch.
Not so fast.
"Nothing enhances a space more than a thoughtful lighting plan," says interior designer Michael Wood of New York City.
Many buildings in the city don't allow channeling into the ceiling to add lighting, so as a workaround, he often uses sconces.
Most people don't start out with a messy closet. Even when a closet is carefully organized at the beginning, however, it might not take long for order to turn to chaos.
"It's common for clients to struggle with keeping the momentum going," says interior designer Caitlin Murray.
But there are planning and design strategies to help closets stay as organized as they were on day one.
Designers often talk about the perfect "outdoor living room" — a deck or patio that combines the comfort and style of indoor decorating with the pleasure of relaxing outside. But what separates these outdoor entertaining spaces from more typically decorated backyards?
Looking for an easy way to organize a messy bookshelf? You might consider turning all the spines backward.
Yes, the backward bookshelf is one of the easiest ways — albeit, not too functional — to clean up a hodgepodge of texts. It's also an interior design craze that's about as culturally divisive as national politics in America.
"Perfect imperfection" is a trend in furnishings and decor.
"It's a return to the artisanal and the crafted, with narrative and meaning to objects," says Caroline Till, co-founder of the London design studio FranklinTill. "Fingerprints of process and technique are part of the aesthetic appeal of the finished item."
Edith Wharton, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author famous for novels set in the late 19th century, also wrote an influential book on interior design, long considered a sort of bible of American decorating.
"The Decoration of Houses," written before any of her novels, was radical when published in 1897. Co-authored with Wharton's distant cousin Ogden Codman, it advocated classical simplicity and balance in contrast to the excesses of the Gilded Age.
Holiday decorating is all about adding a bit of cheer and sparkle, a task made easier by the recent popularity of all things metallic. With winter's shortage of daylight, the sheen of metallic furnishings, fabric and decorative pieces can add a dose of the brightness and warmth so many of us are seeking.
In a story Nov. 28 about throw pillows, The Associated Press misspelled the name of an outdoor furniture manufacturer. It is Woodard, not Woodward.
A corrected version of the story is below:
Another thing to argue about: throw pillows

Arriving at a sprawling flea market on a crisp Saturday morning can be exciting. So many potential treasures might be hidden among the dusty piles of cast-off, second-hand goods.
Yet often it's overwhelming, even for experts. With acres of furniture, art, accessories and more stretching out in front of you, where do you begin?
With a list, suggests New York interior designer Jenny Dina Kirschner, who rarely goes hunting for vintage items without one.
The first weeks of school can be the perfect time to reboot a child's bedroom.
Ideally, the room should be easy to keep organized and great for concentrating on homework. It also needs to be decorated in way that's cheerfully kid-friendly and but not too age-specific, so you won't have to redecorate too soon.
When interior designer Heidi Pribell spotted a dust-covered mantelpiece in the basement of a client's newly purchased home, it was the start of a long relationship.
The ornate white marble mantelpiece, with two caryatids flanking each side, was sitting amid rubble and construction debris. But Pribell, a Boston-based designer and antiques dealer, convinced her client the mantelpiece was worth keeping. That was in 1999.
When Young Huh left for college in the 1980s, she brought "one giant poster of The Cure, bedding from the local bed-and-bath store and maybe some desk accessories." Like so many Gen-Xers, her one creative touch was asking a supermarket for leftover milk crates to use as bookshelves.
Now an interior designer, she has helped her own children decorate their dorm rooms, and she's amazed at the design expectations among college students.
Theatrical silhouettes. Stirring colors. Compelling patterns. This fall, we're seeing decor that confidently takes the spotlight, and the story's got something for everyone.
"It's like midcentury modern has met Sophia Loren," laughs New York-based interior designer Elaine Griffin, describing some of the season's hottest styles. "French and Italian Art Deco influences abound in decor that's soulful, shapely and voluptuous."
Creative new shapes and technology mean that home lighting fixtures often do far more than provide illumination. They can be exciting and sculptural works of art.
"Designs are now not only a source of light, but a distinctive feature of an interior design," says New York architect West Chin.
No matter how old you are, you might have grown up in a home with a wing chair.
This classic chair dates back a lot farther than any of us, according to Bronia Suszczenia, co-founder of the Yorkshire, England-based interior design firm Art from the Start. "The first wing chair appeared in the late 1600s, but it was not until after 1720 that its popularity became widespread," she says.
