WASHINGTON (AP) — Marcus Derrickson scored 22 points, grabbed a career-best 18 rebounds and hit the game-winning 3-pointer on Saturday as Georgetown beat Seton Hall 83-80.
Derrickson got an open look on a deep 3 near the end of the shot clock and buried it with 4.2 seconds left. He was also fouled on the close out by Khadeen Carrington but missed the foul shot. Myles Powell, who finished with 25 points for the Pirates, missed a 3-point attempt as time ran out.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Marcus Derrickson scored a career-high 27 points, 16 in the two overtime periods, Jagan Mosely made two free throws with 1.5 seconds left, and Georgetown escaped with a 93-89 victory on Saturday and a season sweep of St. John's.
In a game overshadowed by Hall of Fame rivals coaching their alma maters, Derrickson gave the Hoyas and coach Patrick Ewing bragging rights. Georgetown won 69-66 at Madison Square Garden earlier this month.
NEW YORK (AP) — Patrick Ewing mostly kept his hands in his suit pockets as he paced the Madison Square Garden sideline. The 7-footer had already served his tenure banging-and-bumping at the Garden for 15 years and over 35,000 minutes logged as a New York Knick, so he could be excused for playing it cool as coach.
"My body still aches from the years I played here," Ewing said, laughing.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Georgetown coach John Thompson III watched anxiously while his team scrambled to get in position for a shot late in the game.
Eventually, Jessie Govan bailed the Hoyas out.
The sophomore center hit a 3-pointer from NBA range with 1:03 left, and Georgetown pulled out an 85-81 upset at No. 11 Butler on Saturday night.
Govan's unexpected 3 put the Hoyas ahead by five. He'd made just two shots from beyond the arc in Big East play before Saturday.
