BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The free-spending Buffalo Bills are using their sizeable salary-cap space to provide quarterback Josh Allen an overhauled offense entering his second season.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Justin Tucker has won a dozen games for the Baltimore Ravens with his incredibly accurate right foot.
This one will be remembered as the one he lost.
Tucker missed the first conversion of his career after the Baltimore Ravens scored the potential tying touchdown with 24 seconds left, enabling Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints to escape with a 24-23 victory Sunday.
ARIZONA CARDINALS (8-8)
New faces: Coach Steve Wilks, QB Sam Bradford, QB Josh Rosen, RG Justin Pugh, RT Andre Smith, S Tre Boston, CB Jamar Taylor, WR Brice Butler, WR Christian Kirk, RB Chase Edmonds, C Mason Cole, CB Bene Benwikere.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Drop back. Throw long. Repeat.
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was flinging the ball far downfield Thursday during a voluntary offseason training practice, targeting an array of receivers that includes newcomers Michael Crabtree, John Brown and Willie Snead.
"Someone kind of joked that we completed more deep balls in practice today when we did the whole offseason last year," coach John Harbaugh said.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the Baltimore Ravens have offered New Orleans Saints restricted free agent receiver Willie Snead a two-year, $10.4 million contract.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither the Saints nor Ravens have announced the move.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have signed free agent wide receiver Brice Butler to a two-year contract.
Monday's move addresses one of the team's biggest needs, depth at the receiver position, following the departure of John Brown and Jaron Brown to free agency.
ARIZONA CARDINALS (8-8)
UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS: S Tyvon Branch; CB Justin Bethel and Tramon Williams; QBs Drew Stanton, Blaine Gabbert and Matt Barkley; DT Frostee Rucker; WRs John Brown, Brittan Golden and Jaron Brown; OLBs Karlos Dansby and Kareem Martin; RB Kerwyn Williams; G Alex Boone; ILB Josh Bynes, OT Khalif Barnes; OL Earl Watford; TE Troy Niklas; LS Aaron Brewer,.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — For the second week in a row, the Arizona Cardinals will be without running back Adrian Peterson due to a neck injury.
The 2012 NFL MVP, acquired in a trade with New Orleans early this season, has been ruled out for Sunday's home game against the Tennessee Titans.
Peterson did not practice all week after sitting out Sunday's home loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was hurt two Sundays ago in the Cardinals' victory over Jacksonville.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians says starting left guard Mike Iupati will have to undergo surgery to remove a bone spur in his triceps area and is expected to be sidelined at least eight weeks.
Arians says Iupati has been trying to play through the injury but the spur has broken off and is cutting into a tendon. The coach says it needs to be repaired before the tendon is cut in half.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Dallas running back Darren McFadden was inactive for Monday night's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Arizona inside linebacker Deone Bucannon, given a good shot at starting by coach Bruce Arians earlier in the week, was inactive as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — J.J. Nelson got so sick of people telling him he was too small to play football that he gave it up in middle school. Fortunately, a few years later, he was convinced to come back.
Now he's the spindly legged big-play threat of the Arizona Cardinals.
Those legs may be as thin as drinking straws, but they can fly.
And with deep threat John Brown sidelined by a lingering injury, Nelson has emerged as the No. 2 option to Larry Fitzgerald in the Arizona Cardinals' offense.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Carson Palmer played the first three quarters in Indianapolis out of sync. Then, suddenly in the fourth quarter, he reverted to vintage form.
Now the Cardinals need their star quarterback to stay in rhythm and keep producing so they can start building momentum after Sunday's 16-13 overtime victory at Indianapolis.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Injuries have forced the Arizona Cardinals to have new starters John Wetzel and Alex Boone on the left side of the offensive line Sunday against the Colts in Indianapolis.
Left tackle D.J. Humphries is out an estimated one to two weeks with a sprained knee and coach Bruce Arians said Friday that starting left tackle Mike Iupati won't play because of a triceps injury. The team also will be without wide receiver John Brown due to a lingering quadriceps issue.
ARIZONA CARDINALS (7-8-1)
New Faces: ILB Karlos Dansby, K Phil Dawson, S Antoine Bethea, S Budda Baker, QB Blaine Gabbert, ILB Haason Reddick.
Key Losses: S Tony Jefferson, DT Calais Campbell, S D.J. Swearinger, ILB Kevin Minter, K Chandler Catanzaro, OG Earl Watford, CB Tyvon Branch.
ATLANTA (AP) — John Brown made a strong statement his lingering quadriceps injury is no concern as he caught two touchdown passes to lead the Arizona Cardinals to a 24-14 preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday night.
Brown showed off his speed when he caught a 28-yard scoring pass from Carson Palmer and a 21-yarder from Drew Stanton, each in the second quarter.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Not long ago, John Brown was raving about how good he felt, how draining a cyst in his back had been the answer to health problems that dogged him throughout last season.
Well, Brown's having troubles again and his health issues are at the heart of the Arizona Cardinals' receiving woes.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jaron Brown made it to the NFL the hard way, impressing the coaches on special teams to earn a spot on the Arizona roster in 2013 as an undrafted free agent.
Now he's coming back from a significant knee injury, but you'd hardly know it. He's been the best Cardinals receiver in training camp not named Larry Fitzgerald.
When coach Bruce Arians lit into his receiving corps after Monday's practice, he singled out Brown and Fitzgerald as its only worthy members.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — "Smokey" is smiling again, and that means an awful lot to the Arizona Cardinals.
"Smoke looks like John Brown," coach Bruce Arians said after an OTA session this week. "A couple of those routes he ran, he did not run one route like that last year. Knock on wood it stays that way."
Brown, nicknamed "Smokey," or sometimes just "Smoke," by his teammates for his speed, was rarely a factor on the field last season.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The fifth draft conducted by the Arizona Cardinals duo of general manager Steve Keim and coach Bruce Arians followed a familiar pattern.
Keim and Arians, obviously, have this drill down pat.
The theme, Arians said, was "position flexibility," players who can fill more than one role.
The first two picks, linebacker Haason Reddick and safety Budda Baker, fit that bill. So do two big linemen who were picked on the final day.
The third-round choice was wide receiver Chad Williams.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer was active Sunday night against Seattle after being listed as questionable Friday with a hamstring injury.
The Seahawks were without safety Kam Chancellor and the Cardinals didn't have wide receiver John Brown. Chancellor has a groin injury and Brown has been diagnosed with sickle cell traits that cause pain in his legs.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Much of the spotlight heading into the Patriots' regular-season opener at Arizona has been focused on the big piece they will be missing on offense.
It's anyone's guess whether New England can duplicate its typical efficiency without Tom Brady. But having to lean on its defense against a Cardinals team that Bill Belichick says has "as good a group of skill players that we've seen in a long time" may not be the worst thing either.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Everyone who pays attention to the NFL knows the Arizona Cardinals are loaded at wide receiver.
There's Larry Fitzgerald, of course, Michael Floyd and speedy John Brown. Last year the Cardinals added J.J. Nelson, who may be the speediest of all.
But there's another Brown on the roster, Jaron, and he's been the most impressive receiver in training camp.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Tyrann Mathieu, Justin Bethel and Frostee Rucker practiced for the first time this training camp Sunday and Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said "there's no doubt" all three will be ready for the Sept. 11 season opener.
Mathieu, an All-Pro safety last season who is coming back from surgery to repair a torn right ACL, participated in several plays 11-on-11 drills with the first unit, surprising himself and his teammates with how much he was able to do.
