NEW YORK (AP) — Jonas Kaufmann, the world's most sought-after tenor, hopes his cancellations are in the past.
Back in the United States after a four-year absence caused mostly by illness but partly by a desire to spend more time with his children, the 48-year-old German with the clarion voice and heartthrob looks is giving recitals in California and New York this week and returns in April for performances in Boston and New York.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Metropolitan Opera could retitle its troubled new production of Puccini's "Tosca," calling it "And Then There Were None."
Bass-baritone Bryn Terfel has withdrawn from the role of Scarpia due to vocal fatigue, the Met said Tuesday. The staging, which opens on New Year's Eve, previously lost its original soprano, tenor and conductor, plus its first replacement conductor.
Terfel has not sung at the Met since 2012. He will be replaced by Zeljko Lucic.
Jonas Kaufmann, "Das Lied von der Erde" (Sony Classical)
Placido Domingo sang it with Bo Skovhus. Fritz Wunderlich with Christa Ludwig. And now Jonas Kaufmann with ... Jonas Kaufmann!
Gustav Mahler wrote "Das Lied von der Erde" ("The Song of the Earth") in 1908-9 as an orchestral setting of six songs adapted from ancient Chinese poems. The Austrian composer intended the vocal parts to be taken by a tenor and mezzo-soprano (or tenor and baritone), alternating throughout the hour-long piece.
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Symphony Orchestra is rehearsing for a new season that will highlight the late composer Leonard Bernstein.
Its 2017-18 season kicks off Sept. 22 with a concert honoring Bernstein.
The renowned orchestra is planning a yearlong celebration of the Massachusetts native. Bernstein wrote the music for "West Side Story" and died in 1990. 2018 will be the centennial of his birth.
NEW YORK (AP) — Jonas Kaufmann has canceled at the Metropolitan Opera yet again, this time nearly a year in advance.
Met General Manager Peter Gelb said Friday that Kaufmann's agent, Alan Green, told the company the 47-year-old German tenor will be unable to attend rehearsals and some of the early performances of the new production of Puccini's "Tosca," which opens on New Year's Eve. Gelb said he received an email from Green attributing the decision to "his personal life and changes."
