MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (AP) — An underground shuttle car has struck and killed a 56-year-old coal miner in Kentucky.
Jeffery Norman Sloan, of Clifton, Tennessee, was hit around 11:20 a.m. Monday morning at Tennco Energy's Toms Fork mine in Bell County in southeastern Kentucky.
It was Kentucky's first coal mining death of 2019 and the second nationally. Kentucky recorded just one coal mining death last year, in March.
MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky man is accused of crashing his truck into a radio tower and silencing the local station before fleeing the scene.
News outlets report Joshua Lee was arrested Monday night on charges including criminal mischief, failure to report a traffic accident and failure to maintain insurance. Bell County police say a piece of the truck was left near the scene and led them to Lee, who admitted to the crash.
HARLAN, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Coal Academy is offering free initial mining trainings this month at the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College in Harlan and Middlesboro.

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (AP) — Authorities say a man driving a riding lawn mower has died after being hit by a van in Bell County.
WYMT-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2bI2Gxk) that Bell County Coroner Jay Steele says 27-year-old Berlin Forest Howard died Monday after being struck by the vehicle.
Howard was working for the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park when he was hit.
Steele says he died from blunt force trauma. An autopsy will be performed.
