For the Bruins and the Beavers, well, it's been a while.
Both UCLA and Oregon State are bowl eligible this season, ending extended droughts without a postseason appearance.
The Beavers (6-4, 4-3 Pac-12) haven't played in a bowl since 2013 — that's all the way back to Mike Riley's second stint as head coach.
HUNTINGTON — Former Marshall University assistant football coach and Huntington native Jim Grobe was named as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach of the San Antonio Commanders of the new American Football Alliance on Tuesday.
From engaging with prospective players to fans, Daryl Johnston for weeks found himself in an awkward predicament.
Johnston, general manager of San Antonio’s franchise in the fledgling Alliance of American Football, could tell interested parties who the team’s coach was (Mike Riley) and where the team would play its games (Alamodome).
It truly is a red dawn, is it not?
For a decade, Nebraska has been the butt of jokes, and Husker Nation has come to expect embarrassing blowouts against teams — regardless of talent level. Where was the fight?
There were two moments when Scott Frost was at Oregon where there were opportunities for him to return to Nebraska. One, when the head coaching job was open in 2014, is well-known.
But Frost said Monday at Big Ten media days he and Bo Pelini talked in 2011 about returning to NU’s staff as an assistant.
LINCOLN — On his first day back coaching at Oregon State, it rained. Mike Riley didn’t care. He pulled out his bicycle and rode down to the stadium anyway. Old times. It felt good.
Despite being Nebraska’s coach for three years, Riley still had roots in Corvallis.
LINCOLN — Recruits keep texting Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander about Friday Night Lights. They call it “live” and “lit.”And Chinander can’t quite believe that a football camp — guys running around in shirts and compression shorts — would draw thousands of fans, as it has since 2015.
It's been a long wait for Cam Jurgens, but his decision to play football at Nebraska was finally made official on Wednesday.
In front of friends, family and a host of media outlets at the Ozone in Beatrice, Jurgens signed his letter of intent to play for the Huskers.
Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos hasn't made a final decision regarding Mike Riley's future with the Huskers, he said Tuesday during an appearance on "The Bottom Line."
"I'm supporting Mike and his coaches to keep our focus where it needs to be," Moos said, "and that is to finish strong and hopefully get into a bowl game."
Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos hopes to meet with Husker football coach Mike Riley, possibly this week, as he evaluates the program.
Riley is 19-15 in his third season at the helm. Moos ultimately will need to decide if Riley gets a fourth year or if a change is needed.
Against all odds: An underdog in the final five games, NU may have a realistic chance at winning four of them
LINCOLN — Chris Jones, the quiet, solemn cornerback, didn’t rehab an injured knee for three months just to see Nebraska football fall flat on its face this season.
So the senior — who sports the Blackshirt he’d hoped to wear all year until a knee injury had other ideas — isn’t giving up on NU’s final five games.
LINCOLN — Mike Riley wasn't ready to talk about Ohio State just yet a week ago, saying all of the Huskers' focus was on Wisconsin to start a difficult two-game stretch.
Riley moved ahead to the Buckeyes on Monday, and talked of a big task on Saturday night with Ohio State "hitting on all cylinders" since a loss to Oklahoma.
Nebraska freshman receiver Keyshawn Johnson Jr. has been ticketed for marijuana possession after a resident director reported suspected drug use in a dormitory room.
According to a university police report, officers responding to a call to Selleck Hall on Friday found 4.5 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in Johnson's room.
