Haas gets Wimbledon wild card; Marcus Willis in qualifying

LONDON (AP) — Past semifinalist Tommy Haas, 2016 junior champion Denis Shapovalov and British women Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Naomi Broady are among the players receiving wild-card invitations to Wimbledon.

The All England Club announced on Wednesday 10 of the 16 players it will be awarding entry to the main draw.

Kvitova puts on confident display in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova produced her most encouraging result since returning from a knife attack to advance to the quarterfinals of the Aegon Classic, a Wimbledon warmup tournament.

The left-handed Czech hit 25 winners with 11 unforced errors as she easily beat fellow wild card Naomi Broady of Britain 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Flipkens advances, Buyukakcay out at Tashkent Open

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) — Second-seeded Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium saved 12 of 14 break points and beat Ana Bodgan of Romania 7-6 (7), 6-3 on Tuesday in the first round of the Tashkent Open.

Flipkens is the highest ranked player in the tournament after top-seeded Johanna Larsson withdrew with an illness before main-draw play began.

The Belgian will face Greece's Maria Sakkari in the second round.
