Maria Sharapova held on to edge 39-year-old Patty Schnyder, the oldest female qualifier in Grand Slam history, in the U.S. Open's first round.

Sharapova let a big second-set lead slip away, then needed four match points to close out Schnyder 6-2, 7-6 (6).

This was their ninth career meeting, but first in 10 years. Schnyder initially retired in 2011, but is now back on tour.

Two matches have been left unfinished at the French Open as play was suspended Sunday night due to darkness.

Qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania and American Christina McHale were level at one set apiece on Court 7, while Pauline Parmentier led Chloe Paquet 3-6, 7-6 (4), 3-1 on Court Suzanne Lenglen in an all-French matchup.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France (AP) — Defending champion United States will play in a second consecutive Fed Cup final after defeating France 3-2 on Sunday.

Madison Keys secured the decisive point for the visiting team by beating Pauline Parmentier 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the second reverse singles. Keys' victory gave the U.S. an unassailable 3-1 lead over France in the World Group semifinals.

The Czech Republic will host the U.S. in the Nov. 10-11 final after defeating Germany 4-1 in Stuttgart.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France (AP) — Kristina Mladenovic rallied to beat CoCo Vandeweghe 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 and draw France level with defending champion United States in their Fed Cup semifinal on Saturday.

The 20th-ranked Mladenovic dropped serve five times but broke No. 16 Vandeweghe's serve six times.

Earlier, U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens struggled to put away Pauline Parmentier 7-6 (3), 7-5 at the 6,700-capacity Arena Pays d'Aix on indoor clay.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France (AP) — U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens will open play for the U.S. against Pauline Parmentier of France in the Fed Cup semifinals.

France No. 1 Kristina Mladenovic and CoCo Vandeweghe will follow on Saturday in the second singles at the new 6,700-capacity Arena Pays d'Aix. France has opted for an indoor clay court.

Mladenovic and Amandine Hesse are set to face Madison Keys and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the doubles on Sunday following the reverse singles.

PARIS (AP) — Kristina Mladenovic, Pauline Parmentier and Amandine Hesse were named in France's Fed Cup team on Wednesday for the first-round match against Belgium.

Seventh-ranked Caroline Garcia and Alize Cornet will not take part in the Feb. 10-11 series, however.

Garcia is France's best-ranked player but still does not want to return to play for the national team as she prioritizes her singles career. She recently reached the fourth round of the Australian Open.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Poised to return to the top spot in next week's world rankings, Angelique Kerber narrowly avoided an upset at the BNP Paribas Open on Monday.

Kerber outlasted Pauline Parmentier of France 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in the third round when temperatures soared to the upper 90s (36 C) under cloudless skies in the Southern California desert. That's nearly 20 degrees higher than the seasonal average of 78 (25 C).

GENEVA (AP) — Switzerland won all three matches Sunday to advance to the semifinals of the Fed Cup with a 4-1 victory over two-time champion France.

Belinda Bencic gave Switzerland an insurmountable 3-1 lead by beating Pauline Parmentier 6-3, 6-4 in the reverse singles after Timea Bacsinszky defeated Kristina Mladenovic 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-5.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Serena Williams ended four months on the sideline with flashes of form and occasional bouts of frustration in a 6-3, 6-4 win over Pauline Parmentier on Tuesday in the first round of the ASB Classic.

Williams, who rested various injuries after her semifinal exit at the U.S. Open, waited an extra day to make her first appearance of 2017 because rain on Monday forced the postponement of her match.
