Maria Sharapova held on to edge 39-year-old Patty Schnyder, the oldest female qualifier in Grand Slam history, in the U.S. Open's first round.
Sharapova let a big second-set lead slip away, then needed four match points to close out Schnyder 6-2, 7-6 (6).
This was their ninth career meeting, but first in 10 years. Schnyder initially retired in 2011, but is now back on tour.

Qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania and American Christina McHale were level at one set apiece on Court 7, while Pauline Parmentier led Chloe Paquet 3-6, 7-6 (4), 3-1 on Court Suzanne Lenglen in an all-French matchup.
AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France (AP) — Defending champion United States will play in a second consecutive Fed Cup final after defeating France 3-2 on Sunday.
Madison Keys secured the decisive point for the visiting team by beating Pauline Parmentier 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the second reverse singles. Keys' victory gave the U.S. an unassailable 3-1 lead over France in the World Group semifinals.
The Czech Republic will host the U.S. in the Nov. 10-11 final after defeating Germany 4-1 in Stuttgart.
AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France (AP) — Kristina Mladenovic rallied to beat CoCo Vandeweghe 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 and draw France level with defending champion United States in their Fed Cup semifinal on Saturday.
The 20th-ranked Mladenovic dropped serve five times but broke No. 16 Vandeweghe's serve six times.
