SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (4-12)
New faces: DE Dee Ford, DE Nick Bosa, LB Kwon Alexander, RB Tevin Coleman, WR Deebo Samuel, WR Jalen Hurd, CB Jason Verrett.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — After only two wide receivers went in the first 35 picks, the San Francisco 49ers had plenty to choose from when it came time to make their second-round...
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — About the only thing piling up faster than the losses for the winless San Francisco 49ers is the injuries.
Coach Kyle Shanahan opened his Monday news conference by updating the health status of nine players. The most notable of those were starting safety Jimmie Ward heading to injured reserve with a broken arm and backup right tackle Garry Gilliam going to IR with a knee injury.
LANDOVER, Maryland (AP) — Benching QB Brian Hoyer for rookie C.J. Beathard gave the San Francisco 49ers a lift — just enough to make their latest loss another close one, making them the first team in NFL history to fall by three points or fewer in five consecutive games.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have taken possession 21 times in two games this season and been stopped short of the end zone each time.
That's not quite what they expected when they hired Kyle Shanahan as head coach after he led the league's most productive offense a year ago for Atlanta.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Kirk Cousins knew he recognized the guy at the Cleveland rest stop last summer who was trying to blend in with the crowd.
Even with his hood up, Terrelle Pryor sticks out.
"I was surprised at how big he was then, too, in the line at Starbucks," Cousins said.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Josh Doctson is confident his Achilles tendons are strong enough to carry the weight of his own expectations.
The Washington Redskins' first-round pick a year ago missed all of training camp and all but two games in his rookie season because of injuries to the Achilles tendon in each heel. The TCU product has declared himself 100 percent healthy during offseason organized team activities. That's good news for the Redskins, who are going to need his production.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Redskins have signed former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Brian Quick.
The team announced the deal Friday morning after agent Patrick Dye posted a photo of Quick signing his contract on SportsTrust Advisors' verified Twitter account.
The signing adds depth to the Redskins' receiving corps after they lost DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon in free agency.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — When the San Francisco 49ers set out to remake their team in free agency under first-year coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, there was a recurring theme in the players they found: familiarity.
Led by quarterback Brian Hoyer and receiver Pierre Garcon, the 49ers brought in a haul of players on the opening day of the league year, including several with ties to Shanahan or other coaches on San Francisco's staff.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Terrelle Pryor signed a one-year contract worth up to $8 million with the Washington Redskins on Friday as the team began the process of replacing two top receivers who left in free agency, Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson.
The 27-year-old Pryor spent the past two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, including a breakthrough 2016, his first year as a full-time wideout: 77 catches for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Amid an offseason of potential upheaval, the Washington Redskins have made an investment in continuity by signing coach Jay Gruden to a multiyear contract extension.
Gruden was going into the fourth year of a five-year contract. The team announced the extension after Gruden and other team officials returned from the NFL combine.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — From controlling their playoff hopes to cleaning out their lockers 12 hours later, the Washington Redskins face an uncertain offseason with the potential for a major upheaval.
Quarterback Kirk Cousins and wide receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon head a list of 15 unrestricted free agents the Redskins must make decisions on in the coming months.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — As long as he has been coaching the Washington Redskins, Jay Gruden has never had to think about life without Pierre Garcon.
The veteran wide receiver hasn't missed a game in four seasons and is as sure a bet to catch the ball when it's thrown to him as he is to be in the lineup. Garcon has 64 catches without a drop this season, providing the rock-solid consistency to go along with DeSean Jackson's speed and sizzle in Washington's passing attack.
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Coach Jay Gruden decided Friday to give Kirk Cousins the night off and start Colt McCoy at quarterback in the Washington Redskins' preseason game against the New York Jets.
He waited to tell McCoy until the very last minute.
"I was walking out of the tunnel," McCoy said. "For me, that's the best-case scenario in my role. I've got to be counted on at any point. I thought I handled it all right."
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Kirk Cousins unloaded on a throw down the right sideline and watched as receiver DeSean Jackson and cornerback Josh Norman raced after the ball.
When Jackson got a step to beat Norman and finished off the play with a touchdown catch, Cousins sprinted down the field to celebrate as fans wowed and cheered.
Jackson versus Norman is the must-watch matchup at Washington Redskins training camp, whether it's during 1-on-1 drills or 11-on-11s. The two...
