CHICAGO (AP) — After seven dominant innings from Jon Lester, the Chicago Cubs turned to a closer-by-committee due to their loss of Pedro Strop.
Lester allowed two hits over seven innings with a season-high nine strikeouts, Willson Contreras hit a run-scoring single in the sixth inning and the Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 on Saturday to maintain their NL Central lead.
CHICAGO (AP) — Jon Lester offered no clues. When it comes to his mid-summer swoon, there's only one thing for the veteran left-hander to do.
"Figure it out. A little rut right now," he said. "Keep grinding."
Lester was hit hard again and the San Diego Padres also battered Chicago's bullpen on their way to a 10-6 victory over the Cubs on Sunday.
CHICAGO (AP) — As far as Javier Baez is concerned, no deficit is too big for the Chicago Cubs to overcome.
Baez and his teammates showed why he feels that way on Saturday.
Baez homered and had four hits — including a game-tying infield single in the eighth — and the Cubs rallied from a five-run deficit for an 8-7 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
Anthony Rizzo's RBI groundout capped a four-run eighth inning for Chicago, which has come from behind in each of its last eight wins.
