ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Redskins have ruled out wide receiver Jamison Crowder, running back Chris Thompson and left tackle Trent Williams for their game Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
PHOENIX (AP) — This is supposed to be the year that the Phoenix Suns finally start to win again.
General manager Ryan McDonough had said the goal was to be the most improved team in the NBA. If that happens, it will be without McDonough.
Owner Robert Sarver fired the general manager nine days before the Suns' season opener.
"For me, the switch has flipped and it's now time to start figuring out how to win," Sarver said in an interview on 98.7 Arizona Sports the day of the firing.
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have completed a four-player trade that sends guard Brandon Knight and forward Marquese Chriss to the Houston Rockets for forward Ryan Anderson and guard De'Anthony Melton.
Knight had been considered in line to start at point guard for the Suns after missing last season while recovering from knee surgery but now will see time as a backup to Chris Paul for what is expected to be an NBA contender in Houston.
PHOENIX (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation says Phoenix and Houston are close to finalizing a trade that would send forward Ryan Anderson to the Suns and point guard Brandon Knight to the Rockets.
Phoenix also would send former first-round pick forward Marquese Chriss to Houston and the Suns would get guard De'Anthony Melton from the Rockets.
The person asked for anonymity Thursday night because the deal had not been completed.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Whenever the Minnesota Timberwolves threatened, the Houston Rockets had an answer.
It usually came from long range.
The Rockets hit 10 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 126-108 victory on Tuesday night, extending their winning streak to nine.
"I knew we were making our shots, but that fourth quarter, that's what we're capable of," said Rockets guard James Harden. "I think it was a four-point game and we went on a 12-0. That's how fast it was."
CLEVELAND (AP) — Chris Paul had 22 points and 11 assists, Ryan Anderson added 21 points and the Houston Rockets became the latest team to thump Cleveland on national TV, beating the disconnected Cavaliers 120-88 on Saturday night.
James Harden only scored 16 — 15 below his league-leading average — but Houston rolled to its fourth straight win and improved to 11-2 since Jan. 8.
PHOENIX (AP) — Houston didn't need James Harden to roll past the Phoenix Suns.
There were plenty of contributions from just about everyone else to make it a 112-95 Rocket romp on Friday night.
Chris Paul scored 25 points to lead six Houston players in double figures and the Rockets improved to 4-2 since losing Harden with a hamstring injury.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — James Harden's strained left hamstring figures to be a problem for the Houston Rockets. It wasn't a big deal Wednesday night against the Orlando Magic.
Gerald Green scored a season-high 27 points, Clint Capela had 21 points and eight rebounds and the Rockets (27-9) got by without the NBA scoring leader in routing the Magic 116-98.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — James Harden and the Houston Rockets are defined by their explosive offense, and it got the best of the Utah Jazz on Thursday night.
Harden scored 29 points, Ryan Anderson added 23 and Houston overwhelmed the Jazz during the third quarter in a 112-101 victory.
The Rockets totaled seven 3-pointers in the third, which equaled the number of field goals for Utah in the same stretch. Harden and Anderson each shot 3 of 4 from the perimeter in the quarter.
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Wisconsin and Michigan have three players apiece on the coaches' All-Big Ten defense first team.
The conference began announcing its postseason awards on Tuesday. The coaches' All-Big Ten offense will be announced Wednesday and individual awards on Thursday.
HOUSTON (AP) — With Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson out, Trevor Ariza decided it was his turn to let it fly from 3-point range.
Ariza scored a season-high 25 points, making 7 of 10 from beyond the arc, in the Houston Rockets' 125-95 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night.
"Tonight was my night," Ariza said with a grin. "If those guys are out, call on me. I get it, rightfully."
NEW YORK (AP) — The struggles stopped for the Houston Rockets once they got to New York.
Nothing gets the Rockets right like a game in an arena where they keep on winning.
"You're in the Garden man, you got to bring it," James Harden said. "The lights are on, so guys played well."
Harden had 31 points and nine assists, and the Rockets had their 3-pointers falling again in a 119-97 victory over the Knicks on Wednesday night.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Houston Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni seemed genuinely disappointed his team only attempted 55 3-pointers against the Charlotte Hornets.
"I don't know why we didn't shoot 60," D'Antoni quipped. "We passed up about four."
James Harden had his first triple-double of the season with 27 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds, and the Rockets finished 22 of 57 from beyond the 3-point arc in a 109-93 win Friday night.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson kept an eye on the TV in the Houston locker room, which was appropriately showing the World Series.
"Justin Verlander is a neighbor of mine," Anderson said. "He's obviously a clutch guy. The city is lucky to have him."
The Rockets' own Mr. October was pretty clutch in the NBA's version of the bottom of the ninth.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — When the Washington Redskins turned over almost half their starting defense from last season, coach Jay Gruden didn't know how it would go.
"You're never quite sure until they get here," Gruden said.
The Redskins' defensive newcomers are here, and so far they're spectacular.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — When Jay Gruden watches college football, it's no surprise the program that has won four of the past eight national titles sticks out.
"You watch other defenses, no disrespect, and then you flip on an Alabama game, it's different," Gruden said.
New Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Manusky tells his players he doesn't have a crystal ball to always know the right play to call, yet before stepping on the field they have an idea what to expect.
"A lot of pressure," linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said. "You look at the install sheets for when we're installing our defense, you see a lot of lines going forward."
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Alabama teammates Jonathan Allen and Ryan Anderson have signed their rookie contracts with the Washington Redskins, who have deals with nine of their 10 draft picks.
The only player Washington drafted but has not signed yet is third-round selection Fabian Moreau, a cornerback from UCLA.
The Redskins announced agreements Thursday with first-rounder Allen, a defensive lineman taken 17th overall, and second-rounder Anderson, a linebacker.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Redskins hope to have found short- and long-term upgrades to their 28th-ranked defense on the second day of the NFL draft.
Washington went back to the Alabama well Friday night to take outside linebacker Ryan Anderson in the second round at pick No. 49 and selected injured UCLA cornerback Fabian Moreau in the third round with the 81st pick. Anderson's selection came after the Redskins took Crimson Tide defensive lineman Jonathan Allen with 17th pick on Thursday.
CHICAGO (AP) — Although the Houston Rockets put up big offensive numbers in the second and third quarters, their work on the defensive end dominated the discussion in the postgame locker room.
"We just locked it in," James Harden said. "We stuck to our principles. We knew if we gang rebounded and got out in transition, we had a chance."
LOS ANGELES (AP) — When the Houston Rockets get going the way they did Wednesday night, all those 3-pointers become a blur.
James Harden scored 26 points and the Rockets hit 20 of their first 39 attempts from beyond the arc in a 122-103 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Houston opened a 31-point lead early in the fourth quarter, so it didn't even matter that the Rockets missed their last 13 tries from 3-point range.
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Rockets could not have been happier to be home.
After a 2-3 trip and 10 of their last 14 games on the road, the Rockets were revved up again back at Toyota Center.
Ryan Anderson had 25 points and 11 rebounds, Eric Gordon added 17 points and Houston used a big second-quarter run to beat the Sacramento Kings 105-83 on Tuesday night.
BOSTON (AP) — In a midseason matchup of MVP contenders, the loudest chants at TD Garden were for the little guy carrying the Celtics.
As the amped-up crowd serenaded Isaiah Thomas, the 5-foot-9 star played like an MVP with 38 points and nine assists to help Boston beat James Harden and the Houston Rockets 120-109 on Wednesday night.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Sam Dekker made his first career start a memorable one.
Dekker, subbing for the ill Ryan Anderson, scored a career-high 30 points, James Harden added 29 points and 10 assists and the Houston Rockets leaned on their usual 3-point offense to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 119-95 on Saturday night.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Bo Scarbrough and Ryan Anderson sat side by side in Alabama's somber, mostly silent locker room, their shoulders hunched over.
Anderson stared glumly at his phone. Scarbrough kept his head down. There was nothing to say.
Both the tailback Scarbrough and senior linebacker Anderson delivered big games in Alabama's 35-31 last-second fall to Clemson. They had wanted a celebration. Instead, they got an unfamiliar feeling: loss.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Houston Rockets are edging toward elite status in the Western Conference, and learning that the climb comes with challenges.
Facing a struggling Orlando Magic team on Friday, the Rockets found themselves in a too-close-to-call contest for the second straight night before coming away with a 100-93 win for their seventh straight victory.
Houston escaped against Oklahoma City with a two-point win at home Thursday night after leading by 18 in the second half.
ATLANTA (AP) — Ryan Anderson no longer holds the unhappy distinction as probably the best Alabama defender without a touchdown.
The top-ranked Crimson Tide linebacker took care of that with a 26-yard interception return late in the first half of Saturday's 24-7 Peach Bowl defensive throttling of No. 4 Washington. With a spin move and a short sprint, he joined that not-so-exclusive club.
ATLANTA (AP) — For Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, it would be unimaginable to end a season any other way.
Once again, they'll be playing for a national title.
Going old school on playoff newcomer Washington, top-ranked Alabama relied on a stifling defense and the bruising runs of Bo Scarbrough to wear down the Huskies for a 24-7 victory Saturday in the Peach Bowl semifinal game.
ATLANTA (AP) — Bo Scarbrough broke tackles, juked defenders and headed to the end zone.
Then No. 1 Alabama's backup — yes, backup — tailback did it again. The 6-foot-2, 228-pound Scarbrough flashed power and moves on both his 18-yard touchdown run early and his 68-yarder in the fourth quarter that all but iced the Crimson Tide's 24-7 victory over No. 4 Washington Saturday in the Peach Bowl and helped launch the team to another national championship game.
