ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — IndyCar said Friday that Canadian driver Robert Wickens underwent surgery this week on his right arm and lower extremities and tests found no additional injuries from his crash at Pocono last weekend.
IndyCar drivers, unsettled and with heavy hearts, return to racing this weekend with their minds on Robert Wickens, the Canadian driver who remains hospitalized after a frightening wreck last weekend.
Once they get in their cars, they will have no choice but to push the Pocono Raceway crash away and focus on their jobs.
"It's been a tough week, I think everybody wouldn't mind a week off," Ryan Hunter-Reay said Thursday.
Ryan Hunter-Reay recalls seeing Robert Wickens' car hit the fence at Pocono Raceway, slingshot back toward his exposed head and that he was somehow able to "shrug down" inside his cockpit to avoid the debris.
Video footage from his in-car camera doesn't show Hunter-Reay moving at all.

Race car drivers understand death, more so than other professional athletes. Nearly every driver at the top levels has lost a friend or a rival in a race, an acquaintance from another series, a driver they grew up idolizing.
Death is a risk the drivers willingly take and their loved ones accept, knowing the passion for a profession that can kill.
