DETROIT (AP) — Former presidents and preachers joined a parade of singers Friday in a hip-swaying, piano-pounding farewell to Aretha Franklin, remembering the Queen of Soul as a powerful force for musical and political change and a steadfast friend and family member.
"Aretha's singing challenged the dangling discords of hate and lies and racism and injustice," the pastor William J. Barber II said. "Her singing was revelation and was revolution."
DETROIT (AP) — Organizers of Aretha Franklin's funeral insist it will be a service, not a show. Yet the Queen of Soul's final send-off on Friday certainly will encompass many elements, emotions and grand entrances that were hallmarks of her more than six decades on sacred and secular stages.
And it boasts a lineup of speakers and singers that would rival any of the hottest revues, past or present.

NEW YORK (AP) — An all-star lineup that includes Stevie Wonder, Faith Hill, Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Shirley Caesar and many more will perform at Aretha Franklin's funeral next week.
The Queen of Soul's service will be held in Detroit on Aug. 31. Also slated to perform are Ron Isley, Chaka Khan, Yolanda Adams, Jennifer Holliday and Franklin's son, Edward Franklin.
The list was provided to The Associated Press on Thursday by Franklin's longtime publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn.
ATLANTA (AP) — Grammy-winning gospel singer Shirley Caesar, whose sermon-song "Hold My Mule" went viral a few years ago, is suing a Georgia rapper over a remix of her song.
The lawsuit, filed this week in Gwinnett County, accuses Keenan Webb — known as DJ Suede — of releasing an unauthorized version. The clerk's office says the court file does not yet list an attorney for Webb.
NEW YORK (AP) — Shirley Caesar won't be cooking "beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes" at Thanksgiving this year.
The legendary gospel singer, who is enjoying viral success with a remix of one of her sermon-songs featuring a line referencing food items, says she's not cooking this year during the U.S. holiday.
"I ain't cooking nothing," 79-year-old Caesar said with a laugh in a phone interview with The Associated Press on Friday. "Absolutely zilch."
