TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey's doctor confirmed Tuesday that she was hospitalized during a 2015 trip to Colorado but Ivey disputed a statement from the state's former top law enforcement officer that she had suffered a mini-stroke.
Ivey said she had altitude sickness during the trip and released a letter from her doctor saying he saw no evidence of a mini-stroke when he examined her a day after her discharge and that hospital tests in Colorado were also negative.
SEATTLE (AP) — Obesity surgery may dramatically lower the danger of heart attacks and strokes in patients with diabetes, new research suggests, reinforcing evidence that benefits extend beyond weight loss.
The study tracked about 20,000 severely obese patients with Type 2 diabetes. Those who had weight loss surgery had a 40 percent lower chance of developing a heart attack or stroke in the five years following surgery compared to those who got usual care with diabetes medicines or insulin.
In a story Aug. 26, The Associated Press erroneously summarized the results of medical studies on the use of daily low-dose aspirin to prevent a first heart attack or stroke. The studies suggest it's not worth the risks for people without known heart disease — not that risks don't outweigh benefits.

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — On a Thursday morning, March 22, around 6:20, Bruce Schmoll was up early for an ice fishing trip to Winona.
Bruce, 64, is a farmer based a little south of Claremont. Tarrie Schmoll, his wife, was getting ready for work just a little ways away.

"It fell out of my hand and I noticed my hand wasn't working," he said.
The razor fell, and Schmoll leaned over to get it, falling onto the floor after it.
University of Oklahoma President David Boren is expected to make a full recovery after having a minor stroke minutes before the unveiling of a statue honoring former Sooners football coach Bob Stoops on Saturday.
The school sent the update in a statement Sunday. It said Boren is expected to be released from the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City in the coming days.
The 76-year-old Boren was Oklahoma's governor and a U.S. Senator before becoming the university's president in 1994.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Televangelist Pat Robertson is recovering after suffering an embolic stroke.
In an online news release, The Christian Broadcasting Network, which Robertson founded, says he was rushed to the nearest stroke center Friday after a family member recognized the onset of symptoms.
The release says that within minutes of receiving clot-busting drugs, Robertson was awake, responsive and able to move all his limbs.
