Costner’s ‘long days’ on set
LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Yellowstone" has everything a worthwhile Western should, including breathtaking vistas, battles over land and Kevin Costner in the lead role.
There's also something rare in the contemporary Paramount Network series debuting Wednesday: prominent Native American story lines and parts, including one filled by an actor formidable enough to stand up to Costner and his ranching baron.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele are among the five directors who have been recognized for outstanding directorial achievement by the Directors Guild of America. The Guild announced its feature film nominees Thursday, including Gerwig for the coming-of age film "Lady Bird" and Peele for his horror sensation "Get Out," which also earned him a first-time director nod.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Like an avenging character straight out of one of his films, writer-director Taylor Sheridan said he was not going to let "Wind River" stay in Harvey Weinstein's control.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Taylor Sheridan has a knack for finding and telling stories about parts of the American frontier that Hollywood doesn't dare touch. The Texas native brought audiences to the U.S.-Mexico border in "Sicario" and to shattered West Texas in "Hell or High Water" through his visceral screenplays. Now in "Wind River," Sheridan explores cruelty at the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming.
For Taylor Sheridan, the West is still alive with frontier tragedies and genre thrills, even if hopelessness has moved in and blanketed the land.
"Wind River" makes it a kind of trilogy for Sheridan, the writer behind the West Texas neo-Western "Hell or High Water" and the Mexican border drug crime drama "Sicario." In "Wind River," he shifts to a Wyoming Native American reservation and behind the camera, but the atmosphere is still rich and familiar: big open spaces with misery all around.
