Detroit Lions player arraigned in NYC police assault case

NEW YORK (AP) — Detroit Lions linebacker Trevor Bates was arraigned Tuesday from a psychiatric ward on charges accusing him of punching a New York City police officer after he was taken to a precinct house for failing to pay a taxi fare.

Bates, 25, pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, resisting arrest, theft of services and obstruction of governmental administration.

Bates has been hospitalized since his Jan. 26 arrest and was arraigned via a video hookup.

NEW YORK (AP) — Detroit Lions linebacker Trevor Bates is undergoing a psychological evaluation at a New York City hospital after his weekend arrest on charges accusing him of punching a police officer after failing to pay a taxi fare, his agent said Monday.

The evaluation is delaying Bates' arraignment on charges including assault, resisting arrest and theft of services, authorities said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Trevor Bates, a linebacker for the Detroit Lions, was arrested Saturday in New York on charges that he failed to pay a taxi fare and then punched a police officer, who suffered a concussion.

Bates faces charges including assault, resisting arrest, theft of services and obstructing governmental administration after police were called around 1:30 a.m. to a hotel near LaGuardia Airport, said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Colts add 2 players to roster, sign 9 to practice squad

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts finalized their roster Sunday by claiming safety Matthias Farley and cornerback Neiko Thorpe off waivers and signing nine players to their practice squad.

Farley, an undrafted rookie, was cut Saturday by Arizona. Thorpe played in 37 games with Kansas City and Oakland, but was cut Saturday by the Raiders.

To clear space on the active roster, Indy released cornerback Jalil Brown and tight end Chase Coffman.

Colts cut Ridley, Irving to reach roster limit of 53

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Inside linebacker Nate Irving and running back Stevan Ridley were among the players cut by the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday.

Irving was hobbled by injuries most of last season. Ridley was signed Sunday and played in Thursday night's preseason finale.

To reach the roster limit of 53 players, Indy placed three players — cornerback Tevin Mitchell, outside linebacker Ron Thompson and offensive linemen Hugh Thornton — on injured reserve.
