STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Webster Financial Corp. (WBS) on Thursday reported a loss of $16.7 million in its first quarter.

The Stamford, Connecticut-based bank said it had a loss of 14 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to $1.24 per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.16 per share.

The holding company for Webster Bank posted revenue of $513.9 million in the period. Its revenue net of interest expense was $498.3 million, also surpassing Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $485.9 million.
