DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Pistons center Willie Reed has been suspended for six games by the NBA after the league investigated the circumstances surrounding his arrest on a domestic violence charge.
Reed was arrested last August on a misdemeanor battery charge involving his wife. He entered a pretrial diversion program in October to resolve the charge against him.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Pistons dramatically shook their struggling roster by acquiring one of the NBA's top players in Blake Griffin in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers.
The deal for the five-time All-Star forward was announced early Tuesday, giving Detroit a player who has been the face of the Clippers but whose career has been undercut by injuries.
MIAMI (AP) — The wife of Los Angeles Clippers center Willie Reed said Wednesday she does not wish to press battery charges against her husband after an argument between the couple led to his weekend arrest.
MIAMI (AP) — New Los Angeles Clippers center Willie Reed was jailed Sunday in Miami on a battery charge.
His wife told police that he dragged her across the apartment while wrestling for a purse and later pulled her hair and grabbed her by the wrist during an argument Saturday night, according to the police report.
MIAMI (AP) — Goran Dragic's eyes were red long after the final buzzer. Willie Reed sat at his locker, overcome by emotion. Some players shed tears. Others yelled in frustration.
The Miami Heat won.
The season ended anyway.
The NBA's turnaround story of the season ended without a trip to the playoffs. The Heat beat the Washington Wizards 110-102 on Wednesday night, but finished No. 9 in the Eastern Conference after Chicago and Indiana won to grab the last two remaining postseason spots.
MIAMI (AP) — Hassan Whiteside was enjoying a record-setting night.
By the end, none of that mattered.
Whiteside needed 13 stitches postgame to close a cut in his right hand, overshadowing his 23-point, 14-rebound performance that helped the Miami Heat beat the Phoenix Suns 112-97 on Tuesday.
The win put Miami back into playoff position in the Eastern Conference. Those postseason hopes may hinge on how soon Whiteside can play again.
MIAMI (AP) — Willie Reed will not travel with the Miami Heat for Monday's game in Dallas because of bursitis in his right ankle.
Reed was injured in the fourth quarter of Miami's win over Indiana on Saturday. He limped around for several seconds, then went down in obvious pain and eventually was carted off the court.
The Heat originally called Reed's injury a calf strain, and tests performed Sunday showed the bursitis.
CHICAGO (AP) — The mantra of every struggling team is to keep working and things will eventually turn around.
Although it rarely works out that way, the Miami Heat are trying to be the exception.
Goran Dragic had 26 points and 11 assists, Willie Reed scored 20 points and Dion Waiters added 19 to lead the Heat to their sixth straight win Friday night, a 100-88 victory over the bickering Chicago Bulls.
Dragic was asked what has pleased him most about the streak following an 11-30 start.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lou Williams scored 24 points and Luol Deng added 19 points and 14 rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers' fourth victory in 20 games, 127-100 over the Miami Heat on Friday night.
Goran Dragic scored 16 points for Miami before getting ejected along with Los Angeles' Jordan Clarkson after a third-quarter scuffle in which both players appeared to be narrowly stopped from throwing punches.
PHOENIX (AP) — The last time the Phoenix Suns beat the Miami Heat, Devin Booker was 13 years old and rookie Marquese Chriss was 12.
So the Suns' 99-90 victory Tuesday night was a long time coming.
Booker scored 27 points — 18 in the second half — and Chriss added a career-best 18 as Phoenix handed the undermanned Heat their sixth consecutive loss.
The Suns snapped a 12-game losing streak against Miami. Phoenix hadn't beaten the Heat since Nov. 3, 2009.
