The six-week fellowship, a first of its kind in healthcare, is designed to teach mental health professionals the business and marketing operations of starting, managing, and growing an independent therapy practice.
The “DocSpace 50” fellowship will be led by Michael Fulwiler, who joins DocSpace as Head of Marketing after leading marketing at The Gottman Institute for nearly 10 years, helping grow the company into the nation’s leading couples therapy brand.
“I’m excited to join DocSpace to help build the future of clinical practices,” said Fulwiler. “I share their vision to empower clinicians to seek independence from large agencies, hospital systems, and venture-backed startups that have overworked and undervalued them.”
The fellowship will include expert-led sessions from top marketing, business, and healthcare leaders with direct peer-to-peer mentorship from clinicians operating successful private practices. Each fellow will receive training in business formation and licensing, branding and marketing, tax and accounting, insurance, and back-office operations.
“30% of American adults have symptoms consistent with anxiety or depression. Yet 122 million Americans, over one third of the population, live in mental health professional shortage areas. We need an additional 6,000 providers to meet the demand. If we can help remove some of the barriers to starting a private practice, then more therapists will be able to serve their communities,” said Dr. Mario Amaro, Co-Founder and CEO of DocSpace.
“We don’t get taught the business skills in graduate school to become a therapist,” said Dr. Amy Marschall, a licensed clinical psychologist based in South Dakota. “And as a field, we do a terrible job bringing along young clinicians. What DocSpace is building is much needed and long overdue.”
DocSpace is a practice operations platform that helps clinicians start, manage, and grow an independent practice. DocSpace provides everything clinicians need to form a tech-enabled business, from automating business entities, licensing, credentialing, and banking, to customizing practice management workflows with collaborative clinical care team environments that are end-to-end HIPAA-compliant.
