Waleed Kadous Joins Anyscale as Head of Engineering

January 4, 2021 GMT

BERKELEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan 4, 2021--

Anyscale, the company behind the open source project Ray, today announced the addition of Dr. Waleed Kadous to the company’s leadership team as Head of Engineering. In his new role, Waleed will bring his experience building planetary-scale applications and infrastructure from his time at Uber and Google to Anyscale as it focuses on its mission of making distributed computing as easy as programming on a laptop.

“As one of Anyscale’s co-founders, I am thrilled to have Waleed’s expertise to help build and scale our product. He’s repeatedly delivered high impact, highly successful products that have been used by billions of people,” said Robert Nishihara, co-founder and CEO of Anyscale. “His leadership will accelerate our ability to make the power of the cloud easy to use and accessible from anywhere. His track record will enable us to continue attracting a high level of engineering talent that will be essential to our growth.”

In Kadous’ time at Google, he launched major projects including Android location, adding indoors to Google Maps, and helping Google build its own maps. At Uber, he led location, maps, and computer vision teams, defined AI strategy, and worked with the CTO to evolve engineering culture and drive the next generation of Uber’s engineering architecture.

“I am joining Anyscale because they’re on an ambitious mission to make distributed computing simple and flexible,” said Kadous. “Almost every project I’ve worked on has required dealing with the complexities of distributed computing. We’d spend 30% of the time developing code and 70% of the time parallelizing it to work at scale. I love the company’s ambition in tackling this problem that has been a thorn in my professional side for two decades. There are reasons to be confident. Anyscale’s library, Ray, has demonstrated that it can be done. I’ve experienced it myself and so have big companies like JP Morgan and Ant Group.”
