Comparing Hims to Roman

San Francisco, CA - ( NewMediaWire ) - November 25, 2020 - Trying to decide between the two popular telemedicine providers, Hims and Roman? Is either legit? What’s the difference between Hims vs Roman’s pricing and medicines?

In this article, we’ll compare Hims vs Roman, and help you decide if either is right to help treat your erectile dysfunction, hair loss, skin issues and more. Our team of reviewers have had online medical visits with both providers, and had medicines from both delivered to our homes, so have some strong opinions.

Is Roman Legit? And is For Hims Legit?

The answer for both is YES - Roman and Hims can both provide real medicines to treat common medical conditions that men have to deal with every day. They both offer real, legit, online, doctor/medical provider appointments with licensed professionals. And they can ship real meds directly to your home. So, with either, you can get a legitimate prescription and online medical exam, without having to leave the comfort of your couch. No more waiting in line at the pharmacy or sitting next to that guy with a cough in the doctor’s office. And, in general, the prices are lower than what you’d pay if you went directly to your primary care doctor and are very competitive with what you’ll see advertised online.

To get started, all you need to do is to visit  Him’s website  or  Roman’s site  to select the condition you want to get treated for, and then begin a simple, online medical exam with a licensed medical professional. The designers and doctors at Romand and Hims clearly understand how uncomfortable it can be to talk about some of these conditions, and they’ve made it very easy and stress-free to get seen by real, licensed physicians and medical professionals.

We’ll compare the Roman vs Hims medical visits in a bit, but first, let’s get into some of the different conditions and treatment options from these two companies. We’ll start with the one they are both most known for, erectile dysfunction, but will also go over hair loss and touch on some of the other medical conditions that they are developing online consultations and treatments for. Let’s get into the comparison of Hims vs Roman!

Online ED Treatment Options from Roman and Hims

The good news is that the medicines Hims and Roman can prescribe you for erectile dysfunction (“ED”) are FDA approved - Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra(R)) and Tadalafil (generic Cialis(R)). Again, you’ll have to complete a painless online doctor’s visit with either company’s licensed medical professionals (a lot less embarrassing than actually having to talk in person with someone about your condition!) But, again, if you are wondering if Roman or Hims offer legitimate erectile dysfunction treatments, the answer is yes, these are real drugs that work for most men.

Of course, you also want to know if the medicines are safe. Thankfully, the medicines that the companies offer have been well studied and are generally considered safe for healthy men. For example, a study focused on Tadalafil (that’s the generic Cialis),  published in European Urology  said, “Tadalafil at doses of 5, 10, or 20mg taken as needed up to once daily for 18 to 24 months was safe and well tolerated. These findings support the long-term use of tadalafil in the clinical management of erectile dysfunction.” And if you are more interested in the generic Viagra, (the active ingredient is “Sildenafil”), a  clinical study  about Sildenafil found, “In this 4-year, open-label study, there was a low incidence of adverse events that resulted in dosage change or discontinuation, and most continuing participants were satisfied with sildenafil treatment for their ED.” In non-clinical speak language, both drugs were well tolerated by the men in the study with minimal, and minor, side effects. And they worked for most men in those studies.

Another interesting thing that both companies can do is that they can prescribe different doses of the erectile dysfunction pills than what the FDA has specifically approved. This is sometimes called “off label,” and all it means is that the FDA has approved the medicine, but that the doctor is using it in a different way than the exact approval. For example, In this specific case, the physicians may prescribe higher or lower doses of Sildenafil than the 25, 50 and 100 mg doses that the FDA has currently approved. So, these doctors will have a lot of flexibility in helping you get the right dosage to fight your ED. And, because they have the ability to get you generic versions, you can save a lot of money vs. buying the brand names.

The table below compares the ED offerings Hims vs Roman.

Hims ED offerings

  • Branded Viagra(R) - Sildenafil Citrate
  • Generic Viagra(R) - Sildenafil Citrate
  • Branded Cialis(R) - Tadalafil
  • Generic Cialis(R) - Tadalafil
  • Branded Stendra(R) - Avanafil

Roman’s ED offerings

  • Branded Viagra(R) - Sildenafil Citrate
  • Generic Viagra(R) - Sildenafil Citrate
  • Branded Cialis(R) - Tadalafil
  • Generic Cialis(R) - Tadalafil

As you can see, both companies offer Sildenafil in the generic (i.e. less expensive and flexible doses) and the name brand Viagra. And both do the same for Tadalafil and its name brand, Cialis. So, if either of those two drugs are ones you have used in the past successfully or are interested in trying, Roman or Hims are potentially great fits for you. Hims also offers a different ED medicine, Stendra(R). As of the moment that we wrote this review, only Hims can provide this - you can’t yet get Stendra from Roman.

For a little more information on the two major ED drugs, the major differences in how Sildenafil works vs Tadalafil are summarized below:

  • Brand name for ED treatment: Viagra(R)
  • Year approved to treat ED: 1998
  • Prescription required: yes
  • Offered by Hims: yes
  • Offered by Roman: yes
  • How long does it work: 4-6 hours
  • When do you take it: ~1 hour before sex
  • How is it usually taken: as needed before sex
  • Most common side effects: Facial flushing (red face), Headaches, Stomach pain, Nasal congestion, Nausea, Dizziness

  • Brand name for ED treatment: Cialis(R)
  • Year approved to treat ED: 2008
  • Prescription required: yes
  • Offered by Hims: yes
  • Offered by Roman: yes
  • How long does it work: 24 - 36 hours
  • When do you take it: ~1 hour before sex
  • How is it usually taken: typically taken daily, as prescribed
  • Most common side effects: Facial flushing (red face), Headaches, Stomach upset, Nausea/diarrhea, Low blood pressure, Blurred vision

If you are going to get a prescription for either of these medications from Roman or Hims, you should definitely answer the questions in the online doctor’s visit as honestly as you can, so they can recommend the medicine that’s right for you. A big difference between how the two medicines are typically used is that Sildenafil is taken an hour or so before you expect to have sex, while Tadalafil is more of an everyday medicine -- you take it daily and then stay ready whenever the mood strikes. Tadalafil can become more expensive though, since you are taking it each and every day, so you need more doses vs. Sildenafil.

Since you do need a prescription for these erectile dysfunction treatments, how hard is it to get seen by a medical professional at Hims or Roman? Let’s break it down! But, first, since ED can be a symptom of a deeper health issue, being honest and open during the online medical visit can help the doctor figure out if there is something else going on. How to get an ED prescription from Roman

It’s pretty simple to get an ED prescription from Roman. Simply head to  their website, GetRoman, and select the treatment that you’d like to learn more about and get. As of the writing of this review, the online doctor’s visit is free for patients looking for erectile dysfunction treatment. You’ll be asked a series of questions in a simple to use online form. You’ll also need to have your photo id, which you’ll use your computer or phone’s camera to take a picture of, so you can prove that you are who you say you are. In some states the law requires that the medical professional actually do a phone or video call with you - but in most, you won’t have to talk to anyone at all. After you are approved, they’ll ship your medicine right to your house in a discrete package. Super easy, and not at all embarrassing.

How to get an ED prescription from Hims

Just like Roman, you’ll have to head to the  Hims website, forhims, to select the treatment that you’d like. You’ll then need to complete the online medical visit, which as of the moment when we wrote this review, is free. You’ll complete a series of questions in a simple online form; you’ll also need your ID. In most states, you won’t need to talk to a doctor - everything can be completed with the online questionnaire, but in some you’ll have to have a video or phone convo with the physician. And, after you are approved and get a prescription, they’ll ship the medicines to your home. The process is easy and nothing to be embarrassed or nervous about.

So, the next logical question is what do they cost? Over the past few years, we’ve seen both companies modify their pricing, but this is what we currently see on their websites:

What does Hims Viagra cost?

As of November 2020, branded Viagra from Hims costs $70 per dose (we assume this is a 50 mg tablet). However, generic Sildanafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, was only $4 per dose (we assume for 40 mg). That’s a substantial savings. And daily pills containing the ingredient Tadalafil were $240 a month for the generic or $570 per month for the branded, which is about $8 per day or $19 per day, respectively. It’s possible that they are running a special deal on their erection dysfunction treatments, so you’ll want to visit their site to see what the current pricing is.  Get a great deal on erectile dysfunction treatments by clicking here now.

What does Viagra from Roman cost?

As of the date that we wrote this comparison between Hims and Roman, branded Viagra from Roman costs $70 per dose (50 mg). Generic Sildenafil is much more affordable at $4 for a 40 mg dose and $6 for a 60 mg dose. That is a massive savings off of the cost of branded Viagra. And branded daily Cialis is $13 for a 5 mg dose, while generic is $8 for a 5 mg dose. The prices do occasionally change, so you’ll want to visit their site to see if they are running a special.  Click here now to get a great deal on ED treatments

All in, the cost of erectile dysfunction treatments and the doctor’s visit from Hims or Roman is likely to be much, much lower than the cost that you’d pay if you visited your primary care physician and got the medicines from your local pharmacy. While it’s possible that your insurance would cover some of this cost, the costs of your co-pays for the medicines and the doctor’s visit - plus the time it takes to go to the pharmacy every month - are likely more expensive than either Roman or Hims. Getting erectile dysfunction treatment from either company is great, low-cost option.

Hims vs Roman for Hair Loss

The other, best known condition that Hims and Roman both treat is men’s hair loss. Losing your hair is part of getting older for many men - in fact, about two thirds of men will notice that they are losing their hair by the time that they are 35, according to the  American Hair Loss Association. Hims and Roman both offer multiple kinds of hair loss treatment. And both would like to sell you a package of treatments in a bundle. Let’s break down the two so you can see which is best for you.

Getting Hair Loss Treatments Online from Hims or Roman

Once again, Hims and Roman make it very easy to get treated online for hair loss. But, unlike their ED offerings, some of the medicines and supplements offered by Hims and Roman do not require a prescription. For the prescription medicine, Finasteride, you have to complete a painless, online medical visit. For both companies this visit is, at the time of writing this review, free. For the non-prescription options you can just purchase a subscription for right from their websites.

We won’t get too far into what causes otherwise healthy men to lose their hair (this condition is called “Androgenetic alopecia” - but the good news is that the  best hair loss treatments  can slow or modestly reverse hair loss with minimal side effects. Both Roman and Hims offer what are generally considered the best medicines specifically approved by the FDA to treat male pattern baldness, Finasteride and Minoxidil.

Finasteride is a daily pill, and requires a prescription. Minoxidil is applied to the scalp as a foam or liquid twice a day, and is available “over the counter” or without a prescription. Both medicines have been well studied, and that research shows that they are effective medicines at slowing hair loss. Unfortunately, neither is a miracle drug - in fact, many doctors  suggest  starting treatment as soon as you start to notice that you are going bald, as these medicines can generally only save follicles that are still capable of producing hair - if it’s dormant or dead, they can’t help.

Does Hims Work for Hair Loss? Does Roman Work for Hair Loss?

The primary, FDA approved hair loss medicines (Finasteride and Minoxidil) offered by Hims and Roman are legit. Numerous studies have shown that Finasteride and Minoxidil each, individually help men keep their hair. And other studies have shown that combining the treatment yields the best results. For example,  this study  of 428 men found that 94% of the men on a hair loss treatment plan that included a combination of liquid Minoxidil and Finasteride showed improvement - which are actually pretty great odds if you want to try to keep your hair.

Because these are real drugs, they do have side effects worth mentioning. Of course, because Hims and Roman are legitimate telemedicine providers, they will share these with you, but here are the general ones to think about: For Minoxidil, the most common (but rare) side effects are irritation and itching at the point of application. Users should watch out for signs of an allergic reaction such as a skin rash, hives or difficult breathing (and get medical attention if they see any serious side effects). Finasteride has been very well studied, and the side effects are rare. However, these side effects include a decreased sex drive/trouble keeping an erection. Other possible side effects include breast enlargement and tenderness, allergic reactions, etc. Again, you need to tell your medical provider if you experience any serious side effects. Neither should be used by women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant; all of the information in this review is intended for otherwise healthy males.

What Hair Loss Treatments Does Hims Offer?

Hims offers generic versions of the FDA approved hair loss medicines, Minoxidil and Finasteride. Additionally, they also offer several supplements that may help with hair loss (although these are not as well studied as Minoxidil and Finasteride). Hims also offers a shampoo that is designed to thicken the appearance of your hair and also block some of the causes of hair loss in your scalp. Their Biotin Gummies are a supplement that may help strengthen hair and nails. These different treatment options are available individually or in bundles.  Get FDA approved hair loss medicines by clicking here.

What Hair Loss Treatments Does Roman Offer?

The Get Roman website offers two major hair loss treatments, Finasteride and Minoxidil. These are the FDA approved medicines to fight going bald. As we mentioned, Finasteride requires a doctor’s prescription, which you can get from the Roman website, generally at no cost. The Minoxidil can be purchased off the website as a subscription.  Click here to get great prices on legit hair loss prevention prescriptions.

How Much Does Hair Loss Treatment from Roman Cost?

Roman offers three month subscriptions for their hair loss treatments - so you’ll get a package every three months. This reduces the cost of shipping, which the company passes onto you. As of the time of this review, the Finasteride and Minoxidil bundle cost $35 per month, Finasteride is $20 per month and Minoxidil is $16 per month. With the free, online doctor’s visit, these are pretty good prices - especially compared to what you might spend if you visit your doctor, pay a copay for the visit, pay at the pharmacy, etc. Roman often runs specials, so visit get Roman to see if there are any promotions.  Click here to see current hair loss drug specials.

How Much Does Hair Loss Treatment from Hims Cost?

Hims offers several bundles of hair loss treatment, and they do sometimes change their prices. The current pricing for the FDA approved bundle, Minoxidil and Finasteride, is $35 per month, although they do sometimes run introductory deals that can save you money. A month’s supply of Finasteride is $28.50 right now, and Minoxidil is $15 per month. The bundle, which includes the Biotin Gummies, shampoo and Finasteride and Minoxidil is on sale for $22 a month, but we believe is usually about $44 a month.  Click here to see prices on hair loss medications.

What else do Hims and Roman offer?

Hair loss and erectile dysfunction treatment may be where Roman and Hims first started, but they have expanded into other telemedicine offerings as well. Both now have product lines for skin care and offer a variety of supplements. We are particularly excited with how Hims has branched out into primary care, where a patient can meet with a Hims doctor or medical professional online and get a real visit for anything from bronchitis, congestion, hay fever, seasonal allergies, rashes, asthma, pink eye… it’s a long list of possible health problems that you can now see a Hims primary care specialist for. It’s pretty impressive. Roman has testosterone support, core sore treatments, weight management, smoking cessation and more. So both companies are taking legit steps to help men get medical advice and treatment from the comfort of their homes.
