Shamayun Miah, a management consulting leader with extensive experience in the technology industry, shares his views on digital tech and new business models. We asked Shamayun how digital disrupts our traditional way of doing business through these new-age digital platforms. Is it simply a matter of companies going online with their websites and eCommerce?

Having a website with online commerce capability was enough ten years ago, what we called eBusiness. Today, it is much more than this; it’s a fundamental shift in how we look at our business and interact with our employees, customers and partners, said Shamayun. Given the Covid-19 pandemic, companies are rushing to become more digital. But what does it mean to be digital?” for some organizations, they consider being digital as technology; for others, it’s a new way of engaging with their customers and partners, and for some, it’s about a fundamental change in the way they do business.

How do new digital platforms support small and medium enterprises with digital reinvention?

The digital reinvention of the business model has brought in significant changes and advanced technologies in the way we do business. It opened up a new path for small and medium-sized enterprises. Also, it empowered entrepreneurs, creative professionals, and even non-tech people to launch their business ventures with far less investment than ever before in human history. These new-age digital platforms, such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, have enabled anyone to reach out to the global market in just a few clicks. They are allowing entrepreneurs and small business owners to start their online businesses without any knowledge of programming or technical know-how. These new-age Digital Platforms powered by cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data and automation are transforming the way people buy and sell goods and services, resulting in the Digital Reinvention of the business model and changing the dynamics of how we do business around the world.

What do you think is the primary driving force behind digital disruption? And why do we call it Digital Age?

The acceleration of digital disruption is primarily due to new digital technologies and the creation of new business models. The consumerization of IT is one of the driving forces of digital disruption. For many years, consumers have been carrying out financial transactions at home with internet banking. With the move to new platforms which allow you to create new digital products and services at a fraction of the time and the rise of Fintech, consumers are now getting a completely new user experience. With this development speed, we have entered into a new era called the Digital Age and not simply the Internet age. We call it the Digital age because it is not just about doing transactions or shopping online; it’s about creating new value, new business models and differentiated experiences. Every business needs to be digital; otherwise, they are doomed for extinction.

What are the key challenges these businesses face adopting new Digital Platforms?

Small and Medium companies now have access to massive computing power on the cloud, artificial intelligence capabilities, automation, which once were only available to large corporations, says Shamayun Miah. Digital Platforms has made it easier for such businesses to compete with large companies.

Any business will face natural challenges, and no one solution fits all. But the critical thing for any business to overcome such challenges is that they should not reinvent wheels- they should leverage existing platforms and solutions. Shamayun Miah explained that AWS, Google, Facebook, Microsoft had created 1000s of API and consumable services which SMEs can access, which are relatively inexpensive. Business owners need to focus on their core competency, differentiated services, supported by digital technology.

Shamayun described how digitalization has become omnipresent- it is everywhere around us, affecting almost every business process across industries. I believe every business will be digital in some form or other. As an entrepreneur, you need to be on top of it because disruption is everywhere!

What essential skills does an entrepreneur needs to grow their business?

An entrepreneur’s nature is to be curious and resilient. They are always looking to discover new products and services, solve real problems and find new opportunities. The fundamental skill that any entrepreneur should have are creativity and problem-solving. The ability to solve problems quickly will make you a successful entrepreneur. You need to build great products and services and find creative ways of reaching your target audience. You should invest in personal development, networking, and strategic thinking. Shamayun Miah argues that you should learn practical skills like coding, designing, marketing rather than theoretical education. It will make you a well-rounded entrepreneur.
