The Truth About Raising a Pit Bull

September 17, 2020 GMT

New York, NY ( TS Newswire ) -- 17 Sep 2020

People seem to be divided on the safety of pit bulls. Some say pit bulls are the sweetest dogs on the planet while others claim they are attack dogs. Both of these answers could actually be true. We’ve got the truth about raising a pit bull.

What Exactly Is A Pitbull?

The actual term of pit bull is a general name for three different breeds of this dog. These include the American pit bull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier, and the Staffordshire bull terrier. These dogs were originally bred as hunting dogs that attacked large animals, for herding livestock and for fighting other dogs. Many times the problem with the breed is that society thinks they are all the same. They may have the same reputation, but not all pit bulls are the same at all. Most of them are actually mixed-breed dogs that all look alike and don’t have a traceable heritage.

Types Of Pit Bulls

The American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier are the main types of pit bull breeds. Most of these dogs are not bred for performance. In the past, some of these dogs were bred for fighting. Show dogs are removed from baiting, ratting and fighting, even if they have it in their bloodline. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bull Terrier are pit bull and terrier mixed together. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was developed in the U.K., and is usually smaller than the American breeds. The English bull-and-terrier cross breed actually changed from the 1850s to the early 1900s. At first, breeders mixed this type with a variety of breeds. By 1917, the main breeder James Hicks had made a dog more like the Bull Terrier that we know today. This modern breed has the usual pit bull head, upright ears, small eyes, and a little bit of a changed appearance. This breed was removed from anything that associated it with dog fighting. One of the more popular types of pit bulls is the blue nosed pit bull. Read about that on this page: https://petlifeworld.com/blue-nose-pitbulls/

Pitbulls And The Law

Pitbulls and the law don’t always get along. Some states have determined the breeds are inherently dangerous. This could stem from studies like the one done at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. It stated almost 51 percent of dog attacks were due to pit bulls. The breed is not alone. They are now on a list of breeds labeled as dogs that could be implicated in a majority of dog bites that lead to fatalities. Some of the other dogs on this is are: Rottweilers, German shepherds, Chow-chows, Saint Bernards, and Great danes. Of course, many of the owners of these breeds would argue their dog is not lethal. Many fear rulings like this lead to discrimination against pit bull breeds. Many landlords will legally not rent to the owners of this breed due to legal concerns. Others simply say owners of pit bulls are financially responsible if the dog attacks another person or animal.

The Shelter Pit Bull

When talking about the types of pit bulls, it’s important to touch on those that are in the animal shelter. Most shelters take in a large population of pit bulls. Many of the dogs in a shelter, no matter their breed, are stray without a known history. The shelter must assign them a breed to identify them an dtrack them fo the clients. They do so by figuring out their traits and looking at their physical design. The designated pit bull might actually be many different breeds put together; therefore, it might not have any of ther personality traits of the usual pit bull breeds. The pit bulls in the shelter should be looked at as any other dog breed in the same shelter. They should not be pre-judged for their personality because they don’t come in the door with a true label.

Changing The Stigma

Many experts say it’s important to work to change the negative perception some people have with pit bulls. Owners need to enroll the dogs in training courses and walk them regularly. This will help them burn off their energy and avoid negative behavior. Many pit bull rescuers say that there has been a different dog breed each decade that gets the bad label. From dobermans to rottweilers, pit bulls are now in the spotlight. They have had some highly publicized problems with dog attacks, but this is not the story for all pit bull breeds or animals. Pit bulls usually like to please their owners. The problem is that many people don’t give them the time of day. If a pit bull is adopted, the owner needs to take the extra time to work with it.

Pit Bull Personalities

So, what exactly is a pitbull? You cannot always judge a dog by its look. There are many different kinds; therefore, there will be different personalities of these dogs. The definition may also change over time as the owners realizes more about their personal pup. These are the main types of personalities of a pit bull:

Aggressive

Some pit bulls are just born with a streak of mean. It’s in their blood. Some pit bulls are adopted or bought to be intimidating. The owner wants them to tough. Some of these dogs are tough, aggressive and essentially guard dogs.

Sweet

Many owners say their pit bull is a perfect angel. Many of these dogs are nothing like the aggressive type. They’re loving, affectionate and have no sort of aggression. Many owners say even if the dog was bred to fight, it can be trained to be a loving dog.

Normal

Many owners say their pit bull is just like any other dog. They are protective over their family, but they also aren’t aggressive unless they need to be. Many owners see their pit bull as a family member with flaws just like any other animal.
