WVC BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Spartans Spoil Coughlin’s Home Finale

Valley West took advantage of nine walks, and scored an unearned run in the top of the first for the game’s lone run in a 1-0 win over Coughlin on Wednesday.

It was the final home game in the history of Coughlin baseball with the three Wilkes-Barre public schools combining athletic programs in the fall. The Crusaders will advance to the Class 5A district playoffs next week, but will be playing on the road.

Nate Baranski went the distance with 10 strikeouts to pick up the win. He also had one of Valley West’s three hits on the day.

Ben Yozwiak, Tony Egidio, Tanner Smith and Sawyer Koretz all had singles for Coughlin.

Lake-Lehman 6, Hanover Area 2

Dylan Wesley pitched three innings of relief to get the win, and Max Paczewski had two hits and scored twice to lead Lake-Lehman over Hanover Area in a game played at Misericordia University.

The win wrapped up the Division 3 regular season championship for the Black Knights. Lehman finished conference play with a 12-2 record, one-game ahead of Wyoming Seminary.

Alex Magdalinski and Connor Morgan each had two hits for Lake-Lehman. CJ Cercone drove in a pair of runs.

Kevin Polanco had two hits and scored one run for Hanover Area. Auggie George had two hits and an RBI.

Aiden Murphy and Todd Phillips each homered, and Wyoming Seminary finished with 10 hits as the Blue Knights closed out the regular season with a road win.

Charlie Kutz pitched two innings of relief to get the win. Kutz, Jackson Amend, Phillips and Murphy all had two hits.

David Piestrak, Sam Saxe, Curtis Gregory, Camdon Capece and Matt Pierontoni all had singles for Northwest.

Chris Genao’s sac-fly with two out in the bottom of the seventh scored Alex Amentler to cap a three-run inning as Hazleton Area edged Pittston Area.

Frank DeGaetano pitched two innings of relief to get the win. Amentler and DeGaetano each had two hits. Ryan Verbonitz had a single and two RBIs.

Cole Cherkas had a single and two RBIs for Pittston Area. Riley Brody doubled and scored two runs.
