Urban farm program gets boost from McNair Foundation
Students and administrators recently joined Janice McNair to celebrate the completion of Pro-Vision Academy’s expansion of its urban farm program.
Pro-Vision Academy is a state charter school located at 4590 Wilmington St. in south Houston. Pro-Vision Academy serves young people in third through 12th grades. It also has a two-acre working Urban Farm/Aquaponics Program that “uses the production and sale of produce to instill the spirit of entrepreneurialism in under-served young men, while addressing detrimental issues that are prevalent in the community such as childhood obesity and the lack of access to healthy and fresh food options.”
The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation helped fund the Pro-Vision Academy expansion with a $450,000 gift.
Two aquaponic greenhouses on the urban farm on the school’s campus “will connect students of the charter school with farms, farmers and the community through entrepreneurial endeavors tied to sustainable health and agricultural practices.”
