Community supports Meals for Moms

May 18, 2019

The 12th annual Meals for Moms luncheon on May 6 in Sycamore was a success for the Meals on Wheels program thanks to community support, according to a news release from the Voluntary Action Center.

Colleen Bredeson, community outreach coordinator, said more than 360 people attended this year’s event, including 290 guests, 57 volunteers and 16 VAC employees assisting. Each year, the luncheon includes celebrity servers, a potted plant raffle, live entertainment and a chance to win one of two jewelry door prizes.

Celebrity servers at the luncheon included business owners, local police and fire department representatives, state representatives, local mayors and other elected officials.

“Our celebrity servers compete to be the best through a tip jar competition hoping to win the crowds favor through tips, bragging rights, and the chance to serve again next year wearing the coveted golden apron,” Bredeson said in the news release. “Golden Apron winners for 2019 include Pete Polarek, Maggie Peck and Andy Sullivan.”

The event is the largest fundraiser for Meals on Wheels. All proceeds go directly to the program.

“There are more and more causes each year and there is a lot of competition for community dollars,” Bredeson said in the release. “Each year, we do well though, and we appreciate the community’s support. It is nice to see new folks coming along with our loyal attendees, too.”

The Meals on Wheels program provides nutritious meals to older adults and others in need who are homebound due to illness, physical or mental impairment or who are unable to prepare food for themselves, and those who are isolated.

“We are so thankful for the support of our many Meals for Moms sponsors,” Ellen Rogers, VAC executive director, said in the release.

The sponsors for this year’s event included the Super Seniors of Sandwich, Jonamac Orchard, First Congregational Church, Forthright Financial, All Around Plumbing, First National Bank, MorningStar Media, Edward-Elmhurst Health, The Suter Co., Lehan Drug, Visiting Angels, Ellen Rogers, Resource Bank, Heritage Woods, Linda Wiggins, Theisen Roofing & Siding, Ron and Anita Mullen, Dick Stipher, Charles Rose Law Office, Burton Lee Sr., Swedburg & Associates, Bob Pritchard, Tony and Micki Chulick, Meridian and Sycamore Cleaners.

“We also have received support from PJ’s Courthouse Tavern for two additional events to support our program,” Rogers said in the release. “On May 30, PJ’s Courthouse will host a charity meat raffle and on June 1, they will hold their garage sale. In both instances, 100% of the proceeds will support Meals on Wheels. For all these efforts, we are very thankful.”
